Long time lurker, first time poster.
Ive been doing a trial and error process and ive learned a lot through my hardheaded efforts.
Been working on getting my agar technique/sterility on point.
Built a SAB and things have gotten way easier.

Currently have 2 mini unmodded one with a top layer of coir the other with exposed grains to see what works best for me. These 2 monos are from t3 plates just your standard GT.

These are the minis spawned approximately 40 hours ago.








I still seem to be having trouble with maintaining surface conditions. And to be honest leaving the stuff alone so it can do what its supposed to instead of messing with things everyday.

I hope to learn much much more, as what at first was just an interest, as im going to school for botany and picked up a mycology textbook just out of curiosity has turned into somewhat of an obsession lol

The mini with the top layer while taking a little longer initially is now tearing through the top layer of coir.

Did some g2g to 10 more qt jars, jars are looking okay maybe a little to much moisture but the mycelium is recovering nicely.

Just a little update on the two minis, have some knots forming and a nice even distribution. I'd say were getting close!


This is just a random container I had overfilled some jars so when i did g2g i had a 1/3 qt of spawn left so threw it in why not.


Finally some g2g jars looking pretty darn close maybe 2 more days.


Was curious what the bottom looked like, and as I thought earlier I need to get my surface conditions down because bottom pin city. Hopefully you can see it in the picture. Just shows I'm still a newbie trying to get it down.

Fixed my surface conditions and woke up this morning to what's looking to be a real solid pin set!
Heres a close up where you can see some clusters pushing through.

Might not be able to tell yet with the picture but it's like that across the entire tub.

things are looking fine man. On the topic of "not being able to maintain surface conditions" it's way too early for you to be thing about that. Until fully colonized the moisture will remain sucked up in the sub. Trying to maintain proper surface conditions before colonization will lead to an overly soaked sub and result in all kinds of problems. Leave it alone as best you can until It's colonized. A light mist here and there won't be a problem but if you go spraying until it looks right (to your new eyes) you'll screw it up.

Don't be afraid to check on it but try your best not to mess with it too much. It's hard at first do to the excitement of your first grow but trust me. There more you fuck with it the more likely you'll screw something up.

I've slowly started to figure that out. Nature works best when left to do it's own thing. I've been searching on something related to the colonization and cant really seem to find a definite answer. So the tubs are I'd say 95% colonized except for the last maybe 1/16 of an inch of the 1/4 inch top layer of coir. But it's currently putting up primordia/knots/pins. The most definitive answers I've found so far is either, its bacterial and fruiting early. Or the very top dried out and the remainder of the sub had formed a microclimate between the two layers and started to use the favorable conditions to fruit. Any insight on this?

It's no big deal man. Don't worry about it. There could be many reasons. Misting b4 full colonization, surface is dry, (I doubt it's from bacteria but it's a possibility) thick top layer, uneven surface ect... it's fine tho.

Gotcha, definitely good to know. I always like to find out what's going on with anything I work on. The whole strive for improvement, and to have a solid understanding of things even if it doesnt really matter. I'm just a curious person lol

Yea I get it. Does the surface look to wet or too dry? Usually with bulk subs, even if it's bacterial it'll fully colonize. Bacteria doesn't thrive in coir like it can on grains. It's more than likely the moisture content of the coir.

I looked at ur pics again. I couldn't really see b4 cuz of my shitty screen and the sunlight lol. It looks like the surface is just too damp. Mycelium won't colonize coir that's too wet. That's fine tho as long as it's not soaking wet.

Yuep I think your right, its definitely not soaked and would make sense I didnt go crazy with misting but definitely did mist the surface lightly a couple times. A nice even distribution absorbed by the top 1/16 inch of coir. Lol

Thanks! And I think my main thing is substrate depth needed to be an inch thicker and and field capacity, started way to wet this go around.

Yea. Field capacity is a huge thing. I'll get the feel for it. Try starting out on the dry side. I use 3 quarts of water per brick of coir. If it comes out too dry, u can always add a little more before u mix it. It's a pain in the ads squeezing out extra water from each handful.

And never mist ur tubs b4 they're fully colonized. It makes the surface too wet and mycelium can't eat thru it.

So first flush didnt turn out horrible, all in all got an oz dry first flush from both tubs. Already have second flush coming in to what looks like the same. From 2 qts spawn not to horrible!

An update on what I've been up to! These original two are still pushing out fruits and some pretty decent sized ones flush 4 and I think the final flush the sub has all but been destroyed lol. Wasnt anywhere near amazing my BE% was at 105%. Hoping to hit that 200% with these next minis


These are two 27qt that are pinning up a storm spawned on 3/8


what's currently going, the two 25qt, 2 27qt, a 70qt, and two tubbowares which I'm conducting little experiments with. Time to invest in some shelving....and shop lights. As i have 4 more 27qt minis to spawntomorrow

And finally some more a2g jars I did 16 hours ago and already the myc is jumping to the grain

Edit: The next morning and this is my best pin set yet I dont think theres much room for more!

It's been a little bit since I've updated this, and a whole lot has changed since I have!



This is a 70qt mono, PES Amazonian, Spore Syringe-Agar-rye. 4qt spawn 8qt coir took about 7 days to colonize, 3-4 more till hypal knots and pins started showing and it's been 2 days since then. I can see a lot of potential, entire surface is covered with primordia. Very fast to colonize and pin but fruits seem to take longer compared to other varieties I have going.


This monster is in one of 4 32qt minis, each 2qts spawn to 4qts coir. They are on the 3rd flush and still seeing a decent flush each time average was 234g wet from each tub 2nd flush.



Decides to do a bunch of "bootboxes" just 16qt tubs 1.5qt spawn to 3qt coir. Also PES Amazonian spore syringe>agar>transfered 3 times>Ll These colonize fast, Jars took 3 days, boxes took 4 days to full colonization. Have racks set up with lighting have the first 15 of these done with a bunch more in the works


Last but not least decided to try my hand at cloning. Clone was taken from the biggest fruit from the second flush on one of my 32qt tubs. 36g wet G.T. real dense solid fruit. Transfer was done yesterday and already seeing some growth.

In total I have 15 bootboxes, 2 25qt minis, 2 27qt minis, 4 32qt minis, 3 70qt monos, and some random experiments, one of which is a 1/4th qt and some coir and has put out 8 flushes now and is somehow still going. and have finished prepping 60 rye qt jars to recive Ll.

I've been keeping busy, and thoroughly enjoy mycology and the entire process. I couldnt be happier with the results I'm getting now compared to when I first started months back. Thanks to all who have helped me along with their knowledge, wisdom, and encouragement. Seriously you guys are inspirations!
