Cool, how dense are those logs? Is the straw really packed tightly in them?

hey hippy,
i can just say cool

the straw was pasteurized i see and did u use grain to infect them?

if grain, u mixed it before u put the straw into the 'log presser'
u constructed urself right?

That is so sweet. How does that tubing come packaged? Is it sterile or did you have to prepair it in some way?

Keep up the good work. I now have a new project to try. I've just begun to work with straw logs and your cloth log is the sweetness. I can't wait to try it myself.

Sorry about that. Pass the props on to the proper peeps.

Do you happen to know any of the answers to my couple of Q's? Maybe you could find out from the cultivator.

the tubing comes in rolls wrapped in shrink wrap in the septic plumbing section of lowe's or home depot (or whatever bigass hardware store). here it is $20 for a 100'X6"dia roll. at my lowe's there was also a 10'X6"dia roll that was 10$... obviously the 100' roll is a far more economical.

i too am curious about prepping the tubing but i highly suspect that it was used as is considering the contents were stuffed in using a plywood form (which would be next to impossible to sterilise).

Good point. I'm sometimes handicapped by the 'Duhh' factor.

You can see that he used the plywood form and plastic sheeting inside the form ,which can be sterilized with alcohol, so the log does not come in contact with the wood. On the site it says you can use a 4" PVC pipe to form as well which would be easy to keep clean.

considering the straw substrate, you really don't have to worry too much about contams if you've got good spawn.

I was going to say much the same thing... I never get contams during the spawn run... only time i've ever gotten contams is during colonization of the grain, and that was due to faulty polyfil lids   I've also heard that people sometimes get contams after the first flush, but I've seen upwards of 4 flushes in very unsterile conditions (think the floor of a dirty closet) with no hint of contamination whatsoever.

After pasteurization straw (and dung... dung is even moreso) is very contamination resistant.  You have about a two week window for the straw to colonize before contams can become an issue.  By that time, the mycelium you've used to spawn should have completely colonized the straw and will be strong enough to fight off any contaminants.

In my personal experience, I've never had it take more than 5-7 days to colonize fully, but I use a decent spawn to straw ratio.

I've also never used a log.  I only used rubbermaid tote containers that I packed with about 5" of compressed straw/spawn.  The log looks like it'd be ok, but it seems like more work than the rubbermaid totes, and each tote seems to give about 4oz dry flushes (at least in my very limited experience... it could well give more).

very interesting...
so is the tubesock just stuffed, then put into the terrarium? It says he colonized it in a humidified environment. Maybe just stick the tubesocks into a PMP setup, without the pump, maybe, and with a heater heating the environment a little bit?

I'm stepping out on a limb here:

i'd say colonisation would have to take place in a humidified environment because the sock is porous and internal water would dry up relatively quickly in a heated, dry incubation area.

Out on a limb? Seems to me like you're on solid ground.

That was my experience with using burlap bags. I tried misting them every day, more than once even, but the outer layer wouldn't stay moist enough for the mycelium to colonize. I eventually wound up stuffing it in a garbage bag which worked great.

This was with H. ulmarius though, not cubensis. It was also not sitting in a terrarium, but out in the open in my bedroom. If it were in a terrarium, and especially if it were in direct contact with wet perlite that might not be a problem.
