How to use dried grain mycelium
    #25827884 -

I’m looking at some lion’s mane dried grain mycelium online and I’m curious if this can be used to colonize substrate or do you still have to start with a grain jar? There’s 1 oz per packet.

What are the pros and cons of dried grain mycelium?

Never heard of it and I wouldn’t use it. Sounds shitty as fuck. Why does it catch your interest?

It is trash in my experience.

I had a friend who bought some and couldn't get it to work so he gave the rest to me. I put some grains on a few agar plates and every single one exploded with cobweb mold.

Just get a liquid culture, slant or plate and don't waste your time with the dried grains.

It’s on Amazon and will ship faster than the spawn on there, so it’s just cause I’m being impatient. But I’ve also seen it other places and was curious about it. Glad to know it sucks! :crazy2:

I'm pretty sure my buddy ordered his off amazon too. There are liquid cultures on there as well I'm not sure about the shipping times on those.

If you're in a bind and can't find anything that works and you're in the US, I wouldn't mind sending you a wedge of my lions mane.

IMO its a scam everytime you read or hear "dried Grain Mycelium" or "dried spore seeds" etc.

what i feel about this is..
these are mainly ordered by noobs or you can say who do not know even the abc or mushrooming.
these are usually delivered much faster by the sellers to give the feel that the product and seller are genuine hence fetching 5 stars or so.
when the "dried grain mycelium" starts producing cobweb mold. the ignorant feels the mycelium has taken off. and when finally it doenst fruit, they feel its their own mistake that they missed a step or two somewhere hence the result.

I have a hard time believing its an outright scam. Seems like quite a bit of effort and I can't imaging there's much money in it. The grains that I ended up with had mycelium on them so they had to go through the effort of growing something on them.

I have to think its someone who has no idea what they're doing, but maybe I just have too much faith in people haha.

  hey.. i was a noob and ignorant once and am still in many aspect. i once ordered the same thing online.. was like dead and dry mushroom spawn. i inoculated a few dishes but only grew mold and bacteria. i was definitely in doubt even before i purchased them however i went against my instinct and went for these online stuff just to realized my instinct was right.

may be i am too harsh to call it a scam..  i guess they are people who sell the surplus spawn which had died to make some profit out of them and capitalize on that 1% chance of growing mycelium out of them. who knows.. they might be succeeding at times..

I ordered ten grams from Lithuania for like six bucks off ebay.  They had dry seed in the information for the listing.  I threw them in some bird seed and nothing happened.  I told them and they sent me ten more grams.  This time you could see the live mycelium.  By then I had started agar (with very little success).  I put two of the seeds in agar and the rest in the seed that I had pc-ed for the second time.  they are growing and I have made a few transfers and they seem to be working better then the two syringes I have ordered (One did nothing and the other did but does not look right on agar).

For six bucks and sending it twice, I am happy with the Lithuania stuff.  I am not sure if this is the same stuff the thread is talking about, but it did have dry seed as part of the add description. I don't guess it was a scam cause they answered my emails every time and quickly and sent me stuff twice and all for six bucks.
Cheers

Ps, I just ordered ten grams of shiitaki from siberia to replace the shiitaki that did not work from my ten dollar syringe that I tried.  Time will tell.

I'm just playing devils advocate here. I'm in no way advocating the use of dried grain mycelium.

Huh, I'm glad that it worked out for you.

Maybe shelf life has a lot to do with peoples success?

Given the track record though, I still don't see any reason to risk it when LC syringes are so reliable and cheap.

Yeah, I realize this now after reading this thread and looking around some more. Didn't realize how affordable LC syringes are and they are on Amazon too. I definitely won't mess with the dried grain mycelium.

I wanted an agar plate or a slant but i am a cheap ass.  I did not do well with one syringe and the other syringe has trich in the bulk.  I don't for sure blame the one with trich cause I am so very new and having plenty of problems.

So I am posting to keep the conversation going and not as instruction of any kind.  I have not had success growing and am so new that I don't even recognize all the problems I am having and the why. My pictures are just my pictures based on what I ordered and nothing more.  I know I am a dummy.

dry mushrooms always come back to life and grow. no matter how old in whatever condition.
Just use tap water mix with a tad of coffee creamer to rehydrate (to when the water is a tad white, you don't need much creamer) and keep the lid closed for moisture.

That is definitely not true. I'm not saying its not possible to regrow dried mycelium, but it is far from reliable and age is huge factor. I'm really not sure what you're talking about with coffee creamer either.
