hey !

i was planning on using a hydrated lime cold water bath for pasteurizing my straw this coming outdoor season and i was wondering if this stuff is ok to dump down the out house hole or in the ditch ?

Lime is harvested from nature.
Id only use lime for a casing layer. IMHO

Crude oil is harvested from nature so it's cool to dump down my drain right?

You should neutralize the lime before dumping it if you have any appreciable quantity of it

If its just a mixture of hydrated lime and water you can dispose of it on your lawn or in your garden. It's caustic, but its good for most plants (except the real acid lovers like blueberries and rhododendrons). Hydrated lime is allowed in organic farming and is frequently used to 'sweeten' the soil in all farming methods, to give you an idea.

When you pasteurize with lime one batch of straw could be as much lime as would treat an entire acre of land.

I can say from personal experience that. I purchased a 50 LB bag of Hydrated lime 5 years ago. WOW and didn't need it. Dumped it 2 years ago out back by the woods. Now the woods are over taking that part of the yard. New trees are growing. by new I mean completely different Kinds not Located in the woods next to the over growth. WBS leftover Flourish... Sunflower Galore last year. Millite and Milo grew at that location.
It hasn't hurt the environment .... It has vastly improved it. I feel upset this year I have to Cut it back because their is just too many new trees.

I know Bod is top dog and I agree that their are many thing that should not be disposed of in nature. I just believe Hydrated Lime is not one of them. Hell they sell it in garden shops also.

How much CaOH are the recipes you're thinking of calling for? This feels way bigger than the small 10 gallon bucket batches I run with ~1/3 cup of CaOH. Not much more than that is soluble, in my experience.

i would be using something like a cup for 55g of water.

reason for not using sawdust i dont have a steamer yet to do blocks ,i would like to build one in the near future !

Here's a shoebox of P. eryngii just 3 days into fruiting. 1:4 spawn to straw (1/3 cup to 10 gallons of water, soaked for 12 hrs)



Took about a week to colonize.

My notes say about a week to fully colonized for the P. eryngii, and I did some Ps. cubensis and Ps. pseudoaztecorum at the same time, with the cubes colonized at 15 days and the pseudos at 18 days. I've also tried a few other species, Copelandia and Psilocybe, nothing yet that hates the high pH. I'll have a better post on the subject once I've got some results. Probably I'll have some fruiting failures.

i have only ever done cubes but this year im exited to do outdoor edibles ,going to do about 5 different oysters and a couple shiitake !

cubes to but last season the squirrels dug the grains up !

Glad I could share it, but bodhisatta has a good point about needing to neutralize it. I think that there's a bunch of work needed in order to be able to recommend the hydrated lime (calcium hydroxide) path to any cultivator.

1. How best to neutralize it (CO2 + CaOH => Calcium carbonate, or calcium acetate with vinegar, for example)
2. Best to point out that solubility is *lower* at high temperatures. Go with cold water.
3. Show that it can work for species other than Pleurotus... (Working on it...)

well these are some interesting points to look at , now i think of it i think hydrated lime may even be used to put in your out house hole , cant quit remember !

Huh, with some googling I'm seeing that it's also used to help treat stinky septic tanks. Thanks for the tip to look into that, I'll have to do some more reading but I think that's a worthwhile point to note. Cheers

Another interesting idea using lime and sawdust:

If you measure exactly the amount of lime water needed for ~60% hydration rate you will have no excess lime water to dispose of.

Sodium percarbonate (oxy clean) also works great on straw for oysters and cubes,    without environmental risk of dramatically changing the ph of soil.

deadmandave something to think about sawdust in a hydrated lime bath !
sawdust seems to be more popular !
lol oxy clean ,never herd of that being used ,learn something new every day !

10gal probably no issue. 10gal three or more times a week. Yea I would treat it first before dumping
