What is a good small instrument to take on hiking trips?

Title pretty much says it all. I would like to buy an instrument that I could take with me in nature, but one that is versatile enough for most kinds of music, and sounds good on it's own. Tin whistle is cool, but it's lound and only good for irish sounding music. Harmonica? Also too limited. Ukulele is the one I'm mostly leaning towards because I used to play guitar, so I could learn it relatively easily. And it can be very versatile in skilled hands. A small acoustic guitar is a bit too douchy.
Any other ideas?

Ehhh ukes are even more hipstery then a mini acoustic :shrug: I'd go for something slightly bigger like a mandolin, though they are harder on the fingers.

Bring a flute of some kind... that's a pretty portable instrument. A smaller, lighter bongo maybe.

Edit: like an ocarina, that would be sick. You might be able to open doors to any sealed off temples you encounter. :justdontknow:

For a while I was thinking about taking up the irish flute, they're pretty portable if you get them key-less and you can learn on the cheap with a tin whistle, but the flute seems a lot more versatile. You can get some pretty cheap ones from 150-300 USD if you look around.

Wow! Ocarina! First time seeing it, and I'm definitely buyong one! Sounds awesome and looks weird! What could be better!

Irish flute also sounds awesome, but is out of my price range for now. I'll start with an ocarina and see if I like, and can learn, playing on a flute.
Mandolin is one of my favorite instruments, I love how it sounds, but is also quite an expensive option for now.
And as for harmonice, it always seems to conjure pictures of depression-era America in my head. :lol: I'll have to see what can be played on it.

Ocarinas are super easy, you pretty much blow into them and cover a hole for the note you want.

Flute takes a lot more focus in how you blow air, you have to sort of angle it right and be very precise. Takes way more practice.

Last few times I tried playing flute by the time I could play some solid notes I was getting crazy light headed :lol:

Ocarinas are also one of the oldest musical instruments (flutes are too) but ocarinas are so simple humans have carved them for thousands of years.

It's always been my dream to learn to play the sax. But brass instruments are heavy, loud, difficult to learn, not suited for nature. They are compact and seem pretty easy to play. They sound surprisingly good too.

Yeah don't rush into too many! I definitely want to get some eventually though, Sunreed makes wooden clarinets and other horns too which is pretty cool! Would be fun to collect them.

I have an actual saxophone but it's seriously tough to play :lol: might need a bit of repairs though as it's very old. The Bamboo ones also seem much more portable which is nice, you could keep them in a small pouch instead of a big horn case.

Yeah, I've heard about Legend of Zelda, but never played it, and this is the first time I heard about the ocarina, and it's connection to Zelda. Every ebay listing for an ocarina has "Zelda" somewhere in the title! :lol:
And Ocarina of Time seems to be voted the best game of all time! Nice!
I'll definitely try to play some of the songs from the game and record it if it's any good!
