New tub room ; evaporation and FAE concern.
    #25815395 -

Hello shroomery familia !
after a while away i'm returning with a new tub room  ; it's small( 6ft X 12ft) and has no windows only a 6" hole in the wall that used to work as an exhaust ; that leads to a smaller room ( 3 X 12 ft ) and this room/hallway has a window and the door to the outside.

i'm concerned about FAE and that my tubs won't evaporate much in such enclosed room , considering i'm planning on having 15 + tubs at the same time.

do i need a fresh air input ? or maybe a fan on a timer will do ? both ? how can i maintain good surface conditions and steady evaporation in here?

i don't want to leave anything open cause it's plain dirt right outside and it's real dusty.

heater keeps everything at 76 and the HR in the room hangs around 40-60 % , lamps are 18 watts 6500K led bar ;

gracias !

If that heater has a blower in it that might be enough, but we have no way to tell as you'll have to dial in your room based on your judgement.

My suggestion, see how that heater does alone (if it has a fan to it). If not, try a small fan set on a timer to kick on periodically throughout the day and only for a little bit. The biggest thing to realize is that the smaller your space is, the more air currents will bounce. Imagine pinball, the smaller areas allow for more rapid movement of the ball - the air is the same. Only increase your air movement if you deem it absolutely necessary. Evaporation happens without airflow and actually creates very subtle displacement of air - this why your tubs, when sealed, create a cyclic environment where the water ends up on the walls and drips back down. Evap is just a transfer of states of matter due to temperature. Tubs will even fruit without any gas exchange holes. Just play it by your best judgement and you will gain the indescribable skill of learning how to dial in an environment.

Good luck nice room
:cheers:

Edit: dont aim any direct air currents - like from fans- at your tubs. This is bad news bears. You're after ambient room movement, not direct fanning.

sounds good !

i'll check the heater tomorrow to see if it has a fan , i think it doesn't , if not i'll try the small fan if necessary

thanks for the good wishes man ;

i'll post results

No matter what you do it'll still get in the tubs. Thats ok tho because spawning and fruiting is dirty af and shouldn't be sterile. Open them up with no concerns.

"how can i maintain good surface conditions and steady evaporation in here?"

By dialing in your tubs correctly.

I grow in standard monotubs, and I can keep good surface conditions wherever my tubs are.
Take regular, six hole configuration monotubs for example. The holes provide the passive FAE, the poly fill restricts it, and in these tubs the substrate is big enough to provide their own surface level humidity.
My goal is a nice healthy layer of tiny water droplets across the surface. I start with very tight poly on the bottom and very loose on top. If I see the surface start to dry up, I give it a misting and restrict FAE some by tightening up the poly. If I start to get puddles, I increase FAE by loosening the poly. Typically when I see the droplets starting to dry only immediately in front of my polyfill I know that I am giving the max FAE I can before things start to get too dry. I've found the balance , and my tubs are dialed in.
You probably already know this stuff

I suppose since you already have a 6" exhaust hole in the wall you could hook a low power blower , move some air in or out :shrug:

:whathesaid: modded monos are the way to go. i never had problems with a dry surface when i use them. shoeboxes on the other hand, ive had nothing but dry surfaces.

thanks mushpunx / madseason and nube424 ,

this info is golden , great tip about looking at right in front of the polly

and yes i have read a lot on this and probably dialed in correctly SOME tubs but i feel i can do a lot better , i'm trying to improve on all fronts.

i like the idea of the open windows like in my previous house , i did this on this new room that i can only visit once a day or every two days , and it had a massive layer of dust after 1 day , i feel i should be careful and close it and manage the air input on a small scale.

you are right though , spawning bulk is not clean whatsoever.

another thing ... condensation in the walls , now that  i have temp control , there will be less difference between inside and outside temp in the tub so i'm expecting less condensation  , what should i look for ? only look at the surface conditions?

gracias again !

There should still be some condensation unless it's the exact same temp all the time.

But if not, yes, just watch the surface conditions. It should make its own condensation on the surface like morning dew. If it's completely drying out, the bottom poly needs to be stuffed tighter.

If you dont have condensation on the walls your fruits will not form correctly. It should be everywhere except under/near your gas exchange holes. It is telltale that your internal humidity is sufficient. Theres always gonna be the temp difference as the organism gives off heat through its breathing n creating that water cycle in the tub

i hear you mean , it's only logical to assume some condensation on the walls because of the heat coming out of your sub making the inside a bit warmer than the outside ; although here is a comment by RR regarding this , which sounds like a good way to go
( i know not everything RR says is law , but it's worth considering )  thoughts?

i'm gonna keep this post going with updates and results for the experiment's sake ;

as posted in cultivation pic of the day :

thanks dudes , i will change things if required , but i'll run them with no fan and see what's up

i usually can get very fast colonization and no contams , but the dialing in and keeping good condition for good flushes is still tricky ; that's why i got my heater and lights , no temp swings and steady 12/12 , but now it's the fae that i want to have secured , this info is helping me and wish me luck !

day 2

update :

pins all over ; hopefully they'll develop

no air movement in the room YET ; just the 6 inch holes in the wall that lead to the other room with the window ;

tub walls show good evap rings and some are walls are dry but with very good surface conditions.

Sorry didnt see you responded. So heres whats up man; Your sub is sick. See the yellow spots? Those are patches of enzymes. Something else is living with your fungus, therefore the immune system is compromised. Chances are your spawn wasnt as clean as it needed to be and is likely bacterial. What this means for you at this stage is affected performance of your flushes, hence why you got a lone soldier pin before the rest of your hyphal knots turned primordial. It now has to focus on fighting the infection in addition to completing its life cycle. You will likely only get one flush before a mold sets in. The reason i asked what sub youre using is because high nutrient subs like h/cpoo is typical of having enzymatic secretions - healthily. CVG on the other hand should not. I would advise looking into your grain prep and seeing where youcan get that more sterile - and possibly more agar transfers beforehand.

Good luck friend

thanks for the input man , i have worked with hpoo before and gotten the yellow "piss" although i don't really see it here , can you point it out ? i can see some grain still ( left uncovered grain ) but not really any yellow liquid or patches

i'll take better pictures to make sure

my jars looked like this :

What is that? Verm?

And yea if you can, post a higher quality picture and ill double check. Could very well be grain but from this resolution it looks like dingy enzyme spots. Either way though the singular pin is a bad sign so it would make sense. Plus with how the myc is growing, it doesnt look healthy. What specifically i mean by this is the thin, lighter myc over most of the surface area, then you have those fuzzy white spots. It just looks like your spawn was bacterial. I am curious on what you used though because if those yellow spots are grain, whats in those jars you just posted?

I don't see any yellow spots either :shrug:

I think it looks good, u got a couple early birds, but it should fill In with pins soon. Surface conditions look perfect to me..
