mouldy coir - prep problems?
    #25809689 -

alright folks,

I prepped my Humus-Ziegel potting compost coir and pet bedding (I dunno the story, it's in german. but comes in sealed 650g blocks like standard)

just added boiling water, in a clean bucket, wrapped in a sleeping bag around it and left overnite.
it ended up a bit wet, so I squeezed it tight to get field capacity. had some left in the bottom of the bucket, a little bit soupy, with saran wrap losely over the top of the bucket

looked at it today (10 days later)

there are small (1/4" diameter) spots of trich? and a clump on the side which looks cobwebby?

I'm wondering if:

A) this coir has added trich (I've emailed the company and waiting to hear back)
B) my prep needs some work
C) my grow area is mouldy as fuck!

any thought appreciated as I've heard coir shouldn't go to shit even after being left out for ages. and lots of my grows have gone to shit even though the spawn looks good

cheers all!

Sorry, a bit confused. Are those pictures of the coir "at field capacity"? Or did you just have a bit left over in the bottom and this is what happened to it? Because I hope this coir wasn't used at that moisture level for substrate.

I guess I'm confused because that's way way way over field capacity. Of course anything that wet would have been attacked by opportunistic molds and bacteria. Saran will create a pretty good humidity container out of this that will speed up the process.

I'm kinda unshocked that you got mold on substrate that wet that sat for 10 days. If I left coffee grinds half that wet for 2 days in a container with saran over it, it would be a big green blob of mold. Coir isn't immune to that.

Honestly, how do you know that it's not just growing on the water?

I might suspect that there may be foreign in the substrate material which is assumed to be 100% coco coir. Perhaps when they make this coco coir, however it is done...??, I imagine they take massive scoops and load into a compactor of some sort to make the bricks. Is this massive pile of coco on a cement slab or the bare dirt?

If it’s on bare dirt then at the bottom of the pile your bound to scoop up some dirt sand wood debris seeds ect. So maybe the material is in fact not 100% coir in this case. In most cases it’s prob pure coir but some bricks aren’t created equally it seems

Just use it ASAP don’t let it sit around before using it maybe that will help the coir still be salvageable and not trash worth a shot imo

That is way over field capacity, definitely would allow mold to grow easier.

I'm not sure how contam resistant coir is if it's that hydrated, that could be the problem alone but maybe it does have trich added?

Left it for ten days?! Well theres you're problem.. its user error not the companies fault.

I use mine 4-8 hours after rehydrating with boiling water.  (use when it cools down to 80°F)
4qt of boiling water per brick is damn near perfect for full capacity. Throw it out and try again

Get your field capacity game on point on this next go around. I'm 99% sure that those spots are trich just waiting to go green and I'm 100% that even if it were to stay relatively clean by way of some miracle mycelium would still not colonize substrate that is so sopping wet.

sorry for not being a bit clearer there
this was what was left over from my spawning, so no, waaaaaaaaaaay over field capacity.
the bit with cobweb would be pretty dry though.
but that's interesting that the mould could grow on the water. thanks for your input.

It can happen even at field capacity

Ok, good, glad you didn't use it. I would assume these pictures will not represent what happens with your spawn. No reason to assume the conditions of those pictured will be representative of what you grow in your tub imo.

cheers everyone. looks like I didn't explain properly, apologies for that.

I did my spawning 10 days ago and squeezed the coir hard so that it was at field capacity
this in the bucket is just what as leftover, and as I'd heard from a few TC's that coir kept for ages, I wasn't sure if I'd bought a dud

cheers everyone!

why's that Cronicer?
because the boiling water will kill it off when I hydrate it?

My first thought when I had seen the 10 days. I usually get a little bit of trich by 5.

I was worrying over nothing and had created a trich haven
thought so

just wanted to check as I'm having such bad luck, I'm just trying to tck off the possible vectors for failure.

Pouring boiling water over a dry block of coir isn't going to pasteurize it.  By the time the center of the block hydrates, the water will have cooled off below pasteurization temperature, which should be maintained for at least an hour.

Next time, hydrate the coir first, then heat to 160F/70C at the center of the coir, and hold that temp for an hour.  A meat thermometer is a good investment.

I use an insulated cooler i find the coir to be well above 170f after an hour. 170F for 10m is "sterilization" killing all vegetative growth and non bacterial spores of everything but stuff like byssochlamys

Live mold mycelium is my guess.

I use room temp water to hydrate bricks.

I use the coir that is not compressed. Comes in a big bag all loose and fluffy. I just boil water and mix it in and let cool.
