One of my favorite things to pick up on the beach are sand dollars.

Sand dollars are cool. I don’t find many on the local beach. The water is dirtier and the shore has a lot more large shell that’ll break them up easier. However I do find a fair amount of them at parade island.
Just got back from an overnight beach trip. Not many fish biting(at least ones worth mentioning) however the beach combing was great. Right off the bat I found an arrow head, it’s weather from being at the beach but it’s legit. Lots of coral, sun dials, and fossil fragments.

Man, I want to get down to the beach this September. I like the outerbanka during the off season.
What beach are you on.

Idaho Star Garnets. I mined the hell out of these when living in Northern Idaho. You can get some outstanding quality gems and the only place in the world you can find 6 ray star garnets. Heres a few tumbled garnets. Learning how to cut and cab them to orient the stars atm.

Those look awesome! How did you mine them? Shovel dirt into a box and screen them out?
I’d love to go find gem stones.
Outer banks are nice, I hope to visit oneday

Yes theres a Forest Service dig site. There are claims all around so you can only legally dig on site. In the past you could dig them out of the creek. Now you have to dig from a pile of creek material. Its 10.00 fee and you can take 5lbs of garnet material, although 1lb is a good day. And yes, buckets of dirt sifted through screens and run through a sluice box. Its brutal hard days but the reward there is better than most.
The stones in the pic have all been tumbled through 4/5 stages of grit. Very beautiful dark to light purple stones. Some have stars, those are worth a bundle depending on how many rays and how strong they are. Usually you get 4 ray garnets worth 30/40/ $$ a karat, 6 rays got for 150/200+$$/karat.
Here in Southern Eastern Idaho im close to Spencer Idaho fire opal mine and dig an hour or so away. Lots of beautiful banded agates an hour to the East by Craters of the Moon, quartz points north in Montana at Crystal Park by Dillon, and Sapphires a little more north towards Missoula. Idaho really is the Gem state. Theres so much amazing rockhounding all over Idaho no matter where you are you can always find something amazing within an hours drive.

Sounds awesome. Someday when we visit Glacier park definitely going to set time aside for gem hunting. I’m going agate hunting in a month in west Texas. I think opal is one of the best stones. I love the way they look.

I own a fire obsidian mine, agate mine, and aquamarine mines. Fun but hard work. I've been hunting the blue beach agates the last few weeks off and on at the coast.

Very cool! Is fire obsidian as good for making arrowheads, points, and knifes?

I got a giant mussel fossil, and giant oyster with the shell still really clear. From way up on a hill, from when it was a big shallow sea. Love them.

Yeah it's gem quality with no air bubbles. I make jewelry out of the best fire and sell it by the carat. I used to knapp a lot but i fucked a finger up in a machine making pressure flaking hard to do. Percussion is fun but I used to make tiny oregon types of bird point replica arrowheads and ishi points that I can't make anymore. I can still flake out knife blades but I like the tiny points. I have no feeling in my left middle finger and nerve damage exactly where I flake into, which then actually hurts every time.

Bummer, nerve damage is no good. I’ve done some reading on flaking points, knifes, tools. Pretty soon I’m hoping to start trying it out. I’ve been collecting pieces of flint and have some deer antlers I’m going to use as knapping tools. Building a long bow or American recurve with traditional stone points.
