Unbodified tub seems slow to fruit
    #25809420 -

Hey everyone! Couple of things before I begin.  First, I'm at work so I'll post pics later. In the meantime I will be as descriptive as possible.  I'll post pictures as needed when I get home later, and I'll crosspost to the main tek thread then.

I've been following Bod's monotub tek with good success. So far there have been zero contams, and the timeline has been tight. I went from spore syringe to agar in mid december and put my grains on coir substrate in the tubs on the 4th. I have yet to see any pinning, and the sub is about 80-90% colonized, with some grain and coir still visible at the surface. The colonization slowed substantially a couple days ago. I'm seeing what appear to be a few hyphal knots with some yellowish/tan color to them. Other sections appear to exibit some bruising. Not sure if this is because I have been regularly misting or if there is something else going on like dehydration or contams taking hold of the myc.

Sub is at field capacity, and I used an approximate 2:1 ratio of wet coir to grains. It doesn't look too dry, but I've noticed that the surface and sides of the tub above the sub are not moist at all if I dont mist at least once per day. There are very small drops of water in the base of the tub underneath the sub. It seems that these tub lids were a little warped in production or shipping, because they are not clearly retaining surface moisture. There are gaps between the lid and the sides of the tub that extend beyond the latch openings. If I am not careful the gaps can wrap around the entire tub. Temperature has been set to a stable 75°F and has hardly fluctuated. RH in the room is 30-40%. Not sure what I'm getting in these tubs but it's probably about 60-75%. Does that need to be higher, and how do I raise it if so?

So is something off, or am I being impatient? Is this a typical series of events for these tubs?

You shouldn't be misting before full colonization to begin with. I will tell you that's your first problem. Once fully colonized, you start with a very LIGHT mist to produce surface moisture and then wait for evaporation & repeat.

I'm going to put my eggs in one basket without the picture and assume that your sub is probably way too wet. The bruising is most likely from the misting and it seems like you're handling it way more than you need to before it's even colonized. Let nature do its thing... if there is anything i learned it's that less is more. "Aware neglect" is probably the best way to put it.

Will be able to tell more from pictures. But that's my 2 cents.

Ur just being impatient. If there's knots forming, just let it be. U can mist if u see it drying, but don't over do it or u'll over saturate the surface. It'll be easier to tell with pics.

Thanks Vibe_Enthusiast. Will follow that advice. I was very concerned about moisture because its winter and the atmosphere is not very humid. Sounds like I've been overthinking it.

As a follow up edit to my oiringal post I am colonizing the tub with cubes

In my environment, I can't flip the lip from first day.  There is too much FAE in the corners, and it constantly drys and starts to mat.  So I changed to leaving lid on for first 2-3 days.  Then letting it rest slightly open on the top (not flipped) until full colonization.  Then, when the knots are in, I flip the lid.  I usually have to mist the corners once a day after lip flip.  I use a piece of cardboard to hover over the center, because it does not need any water.

I'm pretty proud of this one :dancer:

So am I committed to leaving the lid flipped upside down since I started that way, or can I put it on right side up for a few days to allow it to finish colonizing?

No. If it's making knots and stopped colonizing those spots usually stay like that. Just keep it like it is. Give it a another week b4 u start getting worried. If ur seeing knots they're coming. Just don't soak it or let it dry too much.

Ok thanks! Its hard not to obsess over tinkering with the conditions, but I'll leave it be.

Oh trust me I know. Lol it'll get easier to forget it. The best thing I ever learned was how to dial in a modified monotub. Imo that's the best method for growing. It holds surface conditions better than unmodded. I'll see if I can find the link that I learned from

I had a similar issue.  Mine grew eventually but I'm switching to modified tubs from now on.

You can't close it up completely, but there is nothing wrong with reducing FAE.  Kinda need to see a picture though.

Hey nube424. Here are the pics I promised. I took these pics in HDR. Lmk what else you need to see. Tubs are in order from 1-3.

Honestly it's really hard to tell from pics. It looks like it just needs time. But the mycelium on the surface looks matted. Idk if that's from too much fae or too much misting? I would just put the lid on like normal and not mist as much. It's been fruiting 9 days? It's coming.. give it less fae and less misting.

Ok I've reoriented the lids to give it less FAE. So maybe I am misunderstanding what hyphal knots actually are. Could you provide any clarity as to what I should be looking for?

What ur seeing is the mycelium growing off the grains. Once it's fully colonized, hyphal knots are like little white bumps, they're a shade whiter than mycelium. Let me see if I have a pic.

Ignore the deformities. Something was wrong with this tub, overly saturated I think. But those are hyphal knots.

The smaller of those little balls are knots. The larger ones are forming into pins.

Cool. That is a fine explanation of what I am currently seeing. Looks like I have the premature stages of knots. Maybe the cliche about patience being a viture is true after all.

It is VERY true in this hobby. The more u forget about things and just let them be, the more success u'll have. Mushrooms like being left alone.

I didn't see pins until at least day 12 at the very earliest, more like 14.

Oh, and nube424 told me on my first grow to try a top layer of coir over the grains, and that I wouldn't go back…..He was right….way better pinset…:sunspots:

Itll fruit. Practice the forgetting part now. Don't give them attention for A week!
