The filtres are definitely well used and if they’re letting in extra air it could dry out the top?  Seems odd that every one quit at the same time though.  I will change out the poly though.  The lids end up getting a bit rusty too, does that hurt anything?

My plan from here on out is to only do masters and lc in jars so I think maybe I will spring for plastic lids.  Good idea 😊

Fuck lc honestly. And don't use plastic for liquids. I bet it was grain prep over lids. How big are the holes?

I like LC a lot, but it's really shitty to not test your LC before inoculating a bunch of jars.

Agar wedges to grain for masters is still my preferred method but I've been using malt extract LC more and more since I got my flowhood

I’m just having a bit of fun with lc.  Getting into gourmet and messing around with blocks.  There is really no point of lc for my small grow of cubes except to learn.
Holes are 3/8”.  Oats are boiled until I see the first one break, usually 20-25 minutes.

I love plastic lids. I have run mine a bunch of time and no issues, no warping. Way nicer to work with than 2 part metal lids, IMO

I feel like if one were so inclined to build an extra large SAB so as to accommodate bag work it would be pretty cheap and I doubt it much less effective than fumbling around in a small tote mod. Just a thought.

so, ages back i constructed my two sabs. when i made my big one, i fucked around and created a system to use the original one with the new one explicitly to use for bags. then i quit mushcult before ever trying it. well i'm reviving the idea once i get something worth doing bags of. and now, fotos.

my main squeeze. i have since pulled the arm hole things out.

the original on top of the main. instead of that glass between them, the piece of plexi on top had a rectangular hole cut out, off center, to be placed between the boxes, and a lid placed on top. the idea, bags in the bottom, master jar in the top. open bag, point up through the plexiglass, pour from above, close er up. again, never actually tried it, but i reckon i will by summertime.

Only if you don't leave your jars upright. All of my LC jars have modified lids, here's a bunch:

They live upright.

flowhood Q: People are always talking about how heavy flowhoods are. Surely a plywood box cannot be that heavy, surely the filter cannot be that heavy. So it must be the blower?

I want to build a big one but be able to move it easily by myself. edit: I see ohmatic made his blower box detachable from the filter box for moving, he sounded very pleased with the ease of moving.

eBay has pretty cool clean room HEPA filtre ceiling tiles, 2 x 4.  They use them industrially and sell them used too.  I heard some have had luck but you’re taking a chance it could be damaged.  My point is that it is very compact and I’m assuming lighter than some old furnace squirrel cage.  Buy it new if budget isn’t a concern.
Or, build its own table with wheels.  That’s my plan.  I just ordered a filtre 24 x 24 and my son has a blower and works with and inpects furnaces so going to let him do the math and I’ll do the carpentry.

My 24x24x6 filter weighs 18lbs. The blower weighs 15lbs. A sheet of nice 3/4 inch hardwood plywood weighs around 50lbs.

I made mine as compact as I could, and used as little wood as possible.
It still weighs about 80lbs, and is a 24x15x38 box.

I can pick it up and move it myself, but it is not fun.

The plywood is the majority of the weight of mine. The filter is heavier than the blower and the blower is the lightest part

 how amusingly backwards. thanks bodhi. I've been holding full sheets of plywood over my head by myself for minutes on end while I screw them into my ceiling so I should be fine weight wise with that in mind.

Think I'm gonna go with a 24 x 24 for bags.  Doing my own research but I'll just ask here if anyone feels like chattin: does it really matter if one gets a 99.97% or a 99.99% filter? Obviously I'll try for a more efficient one but has anyone ever built a 99.97 and had issues?

I built mine with a 24"x24"x12" filter at 99.97% efficiency about a month ago and have had no problems so far.  I take a "test" plate every time I do transfers/pour agar, by leaving a pitri open in front for about 10 min and all of them are spotless.
