First shoe box mistakes? Please comment

So my first attempt at doing shoe boxes gave me mixed results.  They fruited once but the boxes never fully colonized.

My questions for the more experienced.

From the pictures I have seen a successful shoe box should look like a larger version of a brf cake.  Solid white mycelium all the way through.  Is that correct?

I tore my boxes apart to see what was going on.  The coir was still moist, damp to the touch all the way through but the mycellium wasn't solid, just loose threads ever where through.

My second question is, what happens if you cold shock the mycellium in the shoe box?

I have my brf jars in a temp controlled box, that runs mid 70's low 80's.  I shredded them and put them in coir in the shoe box, but didn't keep the shoe boxes heated, so they were in 65 to 70 degree temps.  Would that have cold shocked the mycellium and made it fruit not colonize the coir?

I also used too little spawn for the amount of coir in the box.  I eyeballed it and I'm sure the ratio was way off.  1:3 or 1:4 plus a casing layer.  Way too much coir.  Does anyone know what affect that has?

I got one flush, but then everything seemed to stop.  Trying to diagnose my mistakes before my next attempt.  When brf cakes are spent they are tight white whole way through and dry out.  The coir was loosely threaded through and still damp to touch. I would appreciate if someone told me what a successful box is like after done.

I curious to see the feedback you get--I'm on late stages of colonization with my first two shoeboxes.

yes

it will set it back. This is a subtropical species it doesn't enjoy the cold. that said low 60s is fine and won't "shock" them into not colonizing.

1:4+casing is fine

So what are some causes of a shoe box not colonizing properly?

It looks like the mycellium just threaded it's way through the coir to fruit, or am I misjudging what colonized looks like with coir.  Cause it's still mostly coir color with just a bit of white here and there.  It is threaded together just not tight and all white like brf cakes.  Which is the only reference point I really have.

I broke up the shoe box and checked out what was going on under the surface.  Does not look colonized to me.

But it did fruit.  Not a great yield, but had 1 flush.

So I have recently had decent success with brf to bulk.

You did hydrate the coir right?

Also you want the same amount of coir and brf cake ratio.

Also the temp is fine. I grow all of mine from 65-70.

The coir was hydrated correctly, but it was not 1:1

I was leaning towards my ratio being the problem.  next batch I will try 1:1 and see how it goes.

Do you use a casing layer?
