Craterellus ignicolor
    #25803763 - 02/10/19 01:20 PM (5 years, 1 month ago)

I heard there is speculation on this species being saprophytic or at least the mycorrhizal relationship being less strict if not facultative.

Could anyone comment on these possibilities?

At lesat a relative (Craterellus tubaeformis) is easily growing on MEYA, while most mycorrhiza do not (they need other agar media with a lot anorganic salts)

Ah interesting  a bit like MS salts perhaps? (of course those are for plants but still)

MS salts will work for some species. I use fungal host solution with PDA for most mycorrhiza species.

pretty sure the saprobe info is outdated

they are definitely mycorrhizal, but with some limited saprobic capabilities

some mycorrhizal fungi can be cultured, though fruiting is another endeavor
maybe theres some way to force fruiting, but as far as i know theres no record of it.

in nature, spores of mycorrhizal fungi germinate and grow for a lil bit, mate with each other, then find some roots to associate with. so its not surprising that some spores may germinate and grow on agar

craterellus tubaeformis fruits from highly decayed nurse logs. because of this, it was thought for a while that they were saprobes, but after further investigation, it was found that the surrounding tree roots actually grow into these nurse logs, as do young saplings, and the craterellus are growing from these roots. this has been further confirmed by DNA work

theres literature to back this, but its long. some links at the bottom. if you want more, i got it...

craterellus probably has some of the wood decomposition genes conserved, which would explain why it would grow better on MEYA than other mycorrhizal species. but most mycorrhizae fruit in response to triggers from the tree host. so unless you hook an IV full of sugar water and strigolactones to your cakes, i dont think these will fruit without a host.

was just skimming through these again, but i thought i read they were only finding fruits in forest 100+years old. how do you replicate that in the lab?

Craterellus sp is defnitly a mycorrhiza mushroom. Thats not the question. But like you said, some mycirrhiza have saprobic capabilities. Some are even cultivated (Phlebopus sp. ). It is worth to try the same with other mycorrhiza.
