home pc music studio?
    #2580363 - 04/20/04 12:31 AM (13 years, 2 months ago)

What would someone need besides a pc and some mics. It would be two non-electric acoustics and twoo people singing. So the guitars would have to be miced up. What other shit would I need to record some songs succesfully? And how much money would I be looking at?

A good mixer for all the mics, a good sound card so it dont sound shitty, some good software to record onto.........also the room size and everything could effect the acoustics....Money wise, you could spend ALOT on all the goods if you want it really good quality, but if your poor like me then theres a lot of equipment for consumers out there that is cheap and works awesome too. Check out ebay.

you need a good way to access the soundcard on your PC (perhaps even buy a new soundcard, external or internal)
That is key

Probably don't NEED good access, it just makes it easier. If you get a good enough soundcard with good AD/DA converters and preamps you could ditch the mixer. And recording into software(soundforge/cool edit), just record at a high bit rate for good quality. Also recording vocals seperately could cut costs, you could sing in a shower stall(I saw on MTV cribs that Outkast said they recorded quite a few songs in their shower). Then align the vocals and guitar in a sequencer.

high end sound card around $400

mics if you dont already have them few hundred to thousands

software(bought not cracked), for both recording/editing software and sequencer about a grand.

you could successfuly record your signal thus:

mics > cheap analog mixer > soundcard > DAW {cubase or logic or pro tools)

it would sound much better if you recorded the tracks seperately and use EQ, Compression and (subtle) Reverb on each track individually and then mixdown:

mics > MOTU 896 or DIGI 002 Rack Firewire Audio Interface > DAW

it would sound even better if you put the voc mics throuh a hardware compressor/preamp...

it would be nice if you told me how much dough you have to work with,
and i would tell you the best things you could get for the $.

I am doing what you are talking about right now.

Depending on your soundcard capacity try to avoid using cheap mixers in the middle of recording.  Everything you add will add to the noise.  Generally your soundcard (a real recording one) will come with atleast one preamplified input.

At 150 or even say 400 you will not get the top of the line firewire interface.  You might try to aim for something in the maudio range (they have some cards that won't run you much more than 150) but be aware that you want to get something witha  decent breakout box.  Some packages will come with the same soundcard that comes with the expensive package but with cheap rca's leads as the input, not a good idea.  If possible get something with XLR based inputs and some preamps.

I use the STA Cport.

If you want more information on things I will give it but I won't exhaust myself talking about the subject just yet..
