Too much innoculate?
    #2579845 - 04/19/04 08:53 PM (20 years, 1 day ago)

If one was to use approx. 20cc's of innoculate on 5 half-pint jars would this harm the crop?

That's a good four times what is necessary, but you'll probably be cool. And if the excessive moisture doesn't slow it down, it might explode with growth. Let us know what happens!

Anything more than 2cc in a half pint jar is really overkill. Those jars are small. They will colonize. Hell, 5 drops will work.

A quart of grain will colonize in a week to 10 days with .5-1cc injected.

This has little to do with penny pinching, although that is a part of it. The main reason is many newbies fuck up before they get their own prints. It is nice to have leftover spores for when they need to try again.

Prints are a great thing... once you get prints, you have unlimited spores that will keep for a long time. Syringes do not last as long... eventually they will contaminate. It is only a matter of time. Five drops from a syringe on a plate of agar is enough to get many many substrains to chose from. You will most likely get a good fruiting strain from this plate. So... using 6-8cc per 1/2 pint is a waste of spores.

Also, you will get many conflicting substrains growing in your jar if you use a lot of spores. This can sometimes cause stalled cakes or uneven growth... but that isn't usually a problem.

Cakes don't need that much water. The more cc's of water you use, the more likely you are to inject contaminants.
