I think it's fungi. This is the first time I've noticed this type of fungus. Anyone know what it is?

Seed cones don't sprout leaves unless they're germinating and then the leaves are usually on stems and are green.

Does Claviceps pupurea sclerotia look like a member of the fifth kingdom to you, or how about single cell yeast? I agree it sure doesn't look like a basidomycete, but fungi are a very morphologically diverse kingdom. I saved the specimen, I'll figure out what it is. I inspected the cone very closely. It looks like fungus to me. The growth has no stem, is fleshy in texture, and resembles Claviceps pupurea to me. It might just be stuff, but it's interesting looking stuff nonetheless. Joshua

The closest similar fungus I know of is Taphrina amentorum. The fruiting bodies are normally greenish, streaked with reddish. If yours is leftover from last season it could have aged to the colors in your photo. It causes the scales of the cone to malform and grow very similarly to what your photo shows.
Happy mushrooming!

Did you recognize that? Your knowledge often suprises me.
The bodies do have a red and green hue to them. The cones were found on the ground, so it is highly possible they remained on the tree for a while before falling, especially looking at the age of the cones.
From: http://www.treesforlife.org.uk/tfl.alder.html
Quote:
The empty cones can persist on the tree until the following spring and are a distinctive feature of the alder tree in winter.
Quote:
...this species grows in the flowers and seeds of young alder catkins, before producing the galls, which harden as the cones ripen.
From: http://www.btinternet.com/~bpgs/NatureNotes.html
Quote:
The female catkins (fruit) of alder (Alnus glutinosa) can sometimes be found with individual ovaries and/or bracteoles enlarged and projecting, looking like tongues, which are initially green but later become purple or deep red. These are caused by the fungus Taphrina alni (<= T. amentorum). This was formerly regarded as a rare gall but it seems to be becoming more frequently recorded. It also occurs on several other species of Alnus in Europe, but appears only to have been recorded on this species in the British Isles.
Taphrina alni galls on alder [The Kingcombe Centre] The first record of this species in Dorset was made at the Kingcombe Centre, on the bank of the River Hooke on 11 August, 2001, by BPGS member Joan Chandler. Returning this year (2002) to Kingcombe for the annual course there on ?Plant-Insect Interactions? Joan was able to refind the galls on last year's tree, and one of the course participants (Ian McKinnon, from London) made a detailed search and recorded it from several other trees in the vicinity. Some of the galls were on this year's cones, and some were remnants on last year's cones. There was considerable variety in their form, and Nigel Spring (the centre's director) prepared this digital image.
I'd say you nailed that one with great accuracy!
I find it interesting that the objects I thought were fungi, were not but were caused by fungi. Thaings that make me go...hmmmmm.

Very similar. What does the apple look like in the blend?
Are there ingredients listed?

Apple? I dont see any apple. There are no ingredients. This is not an apple peel if thats what you are getting at.There are probably better ones in this bag-They are different colors, brown, tan, redish brown, purplish, yellow, cream, you name it-it has it.But there are no fruit peelings in it and it isnt for human consumption. There are pieces of-wood shavings, flowers, and these things.I cant really explain and my photography SUCKS! lol You would just have to see them. They look like a seed pod-a bean hull that has been twisted really bad?You can see where a seed has made an imprint into it if that helps.

The potpourri is called, "Apple and Spice". I thought perhaps the items you are looking at are apple peelings, not necessarily the peel.

No its not that at all-I dont know what it is except that its a seed pod of some sort. This you can tell. Can you see little indentations on it? Also does it have two pieces intertwined? If I was a gambling man,I would put my money on it-and hope I wouldnt lose.hahaha
