Cold-shocking poppies...
    #2579881 - 04/19/04 10:59 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

Can anyone give me some idea how long to cold shock a newly planted poppy to aid in germination?

I've found some stuff recommending the practice, but nothing like a time-frame...

Put the poppy seeds in the fridge for 1-2 weeks befor planting.

SWIM has grow lots of opium poppies before and did not cold-shock he aways gets 90% germ rate.

Yup...  That's what Im after

What I've done is created little 'planter pods' from the bases of milk cartons.

The base is separate and acts as a reservoir, a 1 inch section with a new base made of absorbant paper (which, hopefully, will break down after planting) is covered with a mixture of verm and peat moss.  This sits in the 'reservoir' (I moistened initially with a little rice water for nutrition...)

The reservoir keeps the whole thing moist and allows me to control the moisture levels after germination and the whole 'tube' will be transplanted (minus the reservoir) to a prepared bed after the seedlings have toughened up a little.

I ended up cold shocking the seeds (in the moistened 'pods') for 48 hours and removed them to a warmer loacation (no direct sunlight) this afternoon.

This is the first time I have tried to grow poppies (am I on the right track here?)

lol! Its raw opium taken from a poppy pod... you snit them with a knife and the opium that drools out is what you collect on a knife... thats whats going on in the picture.

How many poppies is that, and has anyone ever tried taking the milk directly onto a cigarette from the poppie and then smoking? Would that work?

Lets see that pic SWIM put up is about 7 pods worth of raw opium. The pods vary from a size of a penny to Canadain daller(the round brass color thing) SWIM belive this is the second harvest of scorning. SWIM find the frist harvest is low but potent the second yeailding about x1.5 more the thrid harvest is mostly clear latex the by the forth SWIM never get any out of the pod so SWIM cut them off and dry them. and make some nice tincture.

Total harvest from 20+ pods very small this is about 5+ smokes for SWIM
