Unmodified tub colonization
    #25797821 -

Hey guys update/ question on my first unmodified. I put my colonized grains into my tub on Friday (unmodified) and it doesn’t necessarily seem to be colonizing anymore than to the point it is now. I started with the lid flipped and saw little growth so I closed the lid and locked it down. Could the stall in colonization be from the high co2 content and no “breathing”? The sub on the bottom seems to colonize in some spots by allot and some not at all. Should I just throw it into fruiting? I’ll include a pic from Sunday as a reference for colonization. What do you guys think? Pic on right is obviously one of the tubs before solid colonization

It's most likely high co2. It looks super healthy so I doubt it's mosture and probably not a bacterial contam. I would let it set a few more days after a VERY brief fanning ( just taking the lid off for a few seconds could be enough, just enough to get some fresh air to speed back up colonization. avoid too much fanning so you don't trigger pinning early.i like to use grow bags in my tubs. If they stall I can crumble it in the bag and they come with a nice filter to breathe through. When it's fruiting time I wait for pins then cut off the front side with the filter patch(it should be facing up inside the tub on it's back like a pillow)

How long has it been stalled and what are your colonization temps? Have the temps dropped a few degrees in last few days? 5 degrees F can make a dramatic difference in colonization speed.

It’s been how it is since like Monday night and the temps are alittle lower than they should be like 67 but that’s all I can do without blowing up my heat/electric bill not sure what  I should do I’m using bods tek and he said flipping the lid works well for colonization think I should try that?

Follow bods advice to the T, hes one of ghe most successful people here. If he says leave the lid flipped then flip it, could be high co2 levels and suffocating, fanning won't necessarily Initiate pinning, 100% colonization is the number 1 pinning trigger

So flip and forget about it. And yea Bods the shit man he has some great teks that are easy to follow along with. I didn’t use a liner and I feel like the actual middle has made less progress than the partially covered grains?

If it says in his tek to leave it flipped then yeah I would flip it, mycelium colonizes in 3 dimensions so if the outside is colonized then the middle is to, from what ive read a liner isnt necessary because what stops side pins is good surface conditions

You should see pins in 13 - 30 days. Less than a week is to early to start worrying about shit. If it seems a little wet, leave the lid flipped. Otherwise, leave it snapped and walk away for a week

It’s fine.  Leave the lid flipped and do nothing.

Pretty sure in either bods shoebox tek or unboddified mono he says dont snap the lid down?

Seems like everyone is set on the flipped lids, sounds good to me and I wasn’t worried about pins I just figured colonization would be further along by now. Appreciate the info guys really do you’re all helpful ass hell keep up the good work.

It was definitely the unmodified tek but idk if he had it flipped right side up but not latched gotta look into that 🤔

I might be wrong. But that's 7 days colonization? It looks to me like the bulk substrate was too wet. Can we see a pic of the side of the tub since u didn't use a liner?

Snappi g the lid or flipping it has nothing to do with colonization. It will colonize even if u tape it completely shut. Usually it stalls like that when ur bulk sub was over field capacity. Flipping the lid is to allow fae for fruiting

A shoebox is not a mono, exactly. Yeah in his shoebox tek he uses a plastic bag with some holes in it, you can do that. You get plenty of FAE with the lid snapped. Just check out Munch's results in the shoebox thread. It really all depends on the environment and your sub's conditions at the moment

Edit: Also, :whathesaid:

Ahh, I was just going off bods tek where he leaves the lid flipped from spawning, I was pretty sure it was unmodified monotub tek

Does this look ok or too moist? I’m a noob didn’t know how to quote. Pot and message boards do not seem to agree rn 😂

Re: Unmodified tub colonization [Re: Myc097]

Maybe. Don't base your evaluation off of condensation. That has more to do with temperature differentials. The fact that you have them stacked means that you'll get different levels of condensation between the two more readily. That's why we stack petri dishes after pouring to deal with condensation. Mycelial mass generates heat from its biological activity, so condensation is really just a sign that it's alive.

When in doubt, you can feel the surface with the tip of your finger. Does it leave some moisture on your finger? If so, it may be over-saturated, stop misting, leave the lid flipped until it dries out a bit

No, that's too much. If using JUST coir, use 3 quarts of water. The recommended 4quarts is if u add verm. I made that mistake before too.

Re: Unmodified tub colonization [Re: nube424]
    #25798880 -

Yeah, about 3 L (3.17 quarts) works for me, with the same brand actually. Bod's tek suggests 5 times the weight of coir in water. So (650g * 5) = 3250g = 3.25 L of water. I found that that was too much for eco earth though, always had to add verm. 3 L seems to be about right. You've got to be able to judge the field capacity and adjust accordingly though

Re: Unmodified tub colonization [Re: juniperus]

Yea. He probly didn't check field capacity. It's probably doomed, sorry to say it. U can TRY to remove the lid for an hour or 2 a day so it can dry out a little. But in my experience, only the top will dry out, the middle and bottom will stay saturated...

Re: Unmodified tub colonization [Re: nube424]
    #25799004 -

That reflects my experience as well. It's much easier to add moisture from a dry sub than remove it from one that's oversaturated. Good luck nevertheless

That's a recipe for coir soup
