I'll take it! Wish there were a way (I had the means) to suspend it in a humidity chamber and let it go buck wild all over lol

I did indeed tamp the sides, though I think being slightly over feild capacity initially contributed to some shrinking... though the surface is still on point, and it is 3rd flush so  ... considered putting it in a full size mono, but I think they'll grow just fine lol

Got some oats sunbathing in the breeze after a nice hot bubble bath. Oats for win. Bird seed is for the birds.

Much easier and less mess no doubt. If you havent tried them or are thinking about starting grains id give them a shot. Cheaper than i thought also. I must have looked at the wrong place online cause they were like 50 cent a pound when i looked. Went to the horse store got 50# for 15$

Oats wouldn't be bad if they had better quality control

I'm only about halfway through my first bag... it's been a good one: how does rye compare to oats for prep?

There's a 4-8 hour hydration soak for rye then basically the same as oats from then on. Rye dries a little easier than oats because of no husk. Both of my 50 lb bags of Oats have been very clean. No weevils or anything that I've seen other people talking about.

Loving the FH! Next round, 6qts RW F9 MS, and 2qts each of 2 PE6 clone cultures from cold storage to duke it out for winning culture on file... I'll likely stick to oats until I see issue

You are overcrowding your flow hood caps. There will be some currents of room air being washed into the flow when you block so much of the flow.

Fisherman's TW F3 and crossed back in some PE. Done with Agar>Pokes>LC
Taller, less pronounced nipple very much like PE6 Pheno. Curious if cap will open even more or stay belled overnight while I prep swabs for f4.

Also you should work a few inches back, about where the second row starts. The air needs space to come out and be laminar before you start obstructing it. Also when you work real close you can accidentally ruin your filter pretty easily by stabbing it with a needle or scalpel being careless...ask me how I know. Or you can spill agar on it.

So far my favorite grain is millet...oats are my least favorite and have been dirty as fuck every bag I bought...last bag had thousands of weevils in it...I want to try rye in bags, was told it's the best grain to work with in bags

:whathesaid:
Also be aware that there will always be some turbulence/mixing of dirty air the first inch or two in from the edges of the filter.
So  24x24 filter has like 20x20 of workable area.

use steam crimped oats. then I mix it with millet. having both textures greatly improves the oats performance. str8 millet will work fine but its more expensive. (still cheaper than rye tho) so cut in steam crimped oats. I just mix em in a bucket soak over night strain (bucket with holes in bottom) let it sit in strainer bucket a few hours then load my bags and jars. no heat super simple great spawn.
I posted this in the cope thread but its so pretty ima put it here too lol pan aus (ISO #3) about ready to harvest but I wanna see if the caps open up more

That filter is good for one petri and two receiving jars at a time.
