Balloon Shaped Stipes? Pic
    #25795934 -

First off I would like to say hello to the community here. I've been a long time lurker with a handful of successful bulk grows under my belt. Also shout out to the guys on the site who put in the time creating the teks that have taught me so much.

Now time for my question. I have a tub currently growing with some large balloon shaped mushrooms. This particular grow is from a clone>agar(with one transfer)>wedge to oat spawn>g2g. 6 qts of fully colonized oats where dunked and spawned to 600g coir + 1 quart verm on 1.21.18. Then placed into fruiting conditions on 1.31.18.

I guess my main question is what do you think the cause is of these odd shaped fruits.

Thank you

Ordinarily, fat bottoms grow into big ones. But they look like they're opening already? Maybe the brown streaks in the stipe is due to some infection, causeing them to open early. Could also be a coincidence of the genetics you cloned.

This happens more pronounced when the substrate is too wet (for me at least) You also get those brown stripes.

Soggy sub would be my guess

Agreed, sub is too moist. Stop misting. Hourglass stipes, striping on stipes, buckling / rippled caps, pronounced wide collar of veil.  Happened to me a while back. Following those symptoms, most likely will end up with some split stipes, especially on the larger ones.

Nothing fucks a substrate over more often than being too wet. I think that nearly all of problems I see in the OMC that isn't a contamination is too wet. I think a lot of this stems from this god damn half assed bucket tek that has been the gold standard for a little while. That tek makes the wettest damn substrate I have ever seen! ~1 gallon of water to a brick of coir is madness. If you wanna do something do it whole assed please.

Thank you for the quick replies. Unfortunately I am going out of town for a few days tomorrow so I wont be able to see how they progress. My plan for the moment is to harvest the biggest ones tonight since the Vail is starting to tear anyways. Hopefully the remainder of the flush will look better once I return.

I use 0.85gal to a brick or less. and I would say 0.85gal to 650g coir is on upper limits of field capacities definition via the squeeze method. for some brands it's probably mud and for other brands might be dry. but usually 0.85 is my go to. which works out to multiplying your coir weight by 5 to get grams/mL of water to use.

I aint about that bucket life! I like to work hard and long for my never ever straight coir substrate and sing sweet nothings into it's ear as it pasteurizes under electronically controlled conditions with my hand down my....whoops where am I?

Yea I've got a pile of old straw subs that refuses to compost in my backyard that can attest to that haha.

As far as water to coir ratio I follow your tek bod (coir weight x 5) + 500ml extra h20 per liter of dry verm. Field capacity always comes out pretty much on point. I do try to keep it on the dryer side.

Well its time to harvest those fruits so I can get them dehydrated before I leave but hopefully the rest of the tub looks better when I get home
