more myc = more, bigger shrooms?
    #2579505 - 04/19/04 09:51 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

Does the amount of mycellium, the fluffiness, or brightness (white) on a cake play any part in determining the yield and/or quality of mushrooms?? Or, is it only useful in preventing contamination??

what are some reasons that mycellium may be more grey as oppposed to bright white and fluffy.... temperature?, h20 amount?? thanks..

To some extent...healthy myc = healthy mushy.

Not really true...and there is no real way of measuring the amount of myc you have. A strong myc colonization = better.

More myc helps to an extent. More than 4-5 inches of substrate is a waste... but you could fill a rubbermaid with 4 inches of pasturized poo/straw... basically, anything more than 1/2 pint of brf and verm can produce some large shrooms.

Yeah, I am saying that. But I pretty much ignored your post and only looked at the subject line.

The fluffy myc that grows on top of a cake usually happens when it is very humid... but it implies the cake is very healthy. Pins are never far off when a cake gets fuzzy.

But yeah... 1/2 cakes have trouble producing a lot of full sized cubes. Grain or straw/poo are better substrates. The more you use... the bigger the shrooms... to a point.

I'd say yes to all three points.

The amount of mycelium present is an indication as to the biomass available for conversion to fruit bodies. It is very hard to determine the actual mycelium present though. One assumes that the mycelium present is directly related to the ammount of substrate being colonized.

The fluffiness of mycelium indicates active vegatative growth. Usually if you have good vegatative growth you will have good flushes. Sometimes fluffy versus rhizomorphic growth can be an indication of a strain that may not pin prolifically though. I am working with a PR casing that was insanely white and had thick fluffy growth, but has yet to fruit (PR is a freaky strain so this is an exception). The fluffiness is related to the whiteness as well to a degree.

The whiteness of mycelium is related to the hydration of the substrate and environment. When the mycelial cells are filled with water their optical density (whiteness) increases. When hydration is proper, more mycelium can be supported (assuming substrate and nutrients are not limiting). As more mycelium grows, the density of the mycelium increases and makes things look whiter.

I look at all of these things when determining the health of a culture.

Usually grey mycelium can either be a sign of contamination or less than optimal hydration, and if it turns green and sprouts teeth...run!!!

Joshua

joshua smoked that question out

P eople case there cakes for this reason. It keeps them hydrated properly when fruiting and gives you a larger surface area for shrooms to appear

hehe

there is definitly enough water present though...... I can see it

and I know from experience its not contam's... its just not as white as I'd like.
