Blu Spore's art thread/Journal 1

I wanted to make a thread where I post the new stuff I working on, as well as my successes and failures as I try to improve. So posting the rough drafts, the studies and sketchbook material that I usually never post and which does not usually see the light of day.
Normally I only show my most polished and realized pieces but the majority of the art I do is rough and sketchy and not all of it is successful. This thread is a place to post that stuff without clogging up the established 'show your art thread'. Also I think this is a way to keep me motivated to do sketches and keep track of ideas and to improve my technique. Maybe I will do some tutorials and show how I try and go about things. Ask me questions and/or comment on what you like or don't like.
Thanks for looking

Cool stuff dude. Have you drawn up graphic novels at all?
It seems like you could do that medium some justice.

I've dabbled in comic book art, especially when I was younger and really into that sort of thing. I'm more into painting and illustration these days.
Here is a sketch from the other day, I am planning a painting of this one in nearish future.
Also a sculpture outside in the snow.

Small sketchbook that I carry around sometimes. Usually to put down ideas or just quickly draw what's in front of me.

I finally "finished" this drawing. I had been picking away at it for months it seems. I think I am improving because the more I practice the more flaws I see that need to be corrected. I even took it to a teacher/mentor who did some detailing on it, it was shocking to see how much farther technique can be polished. It's hard to stay focused sometimes.
The drawing above is the most refined and finished drawing I have ever done. My usual style is more gestural and sketchy. I think the danger with highly refined rendered work is that it becomes stiff and static. The precision can take the gesture out of the drawing and leave it somewhat lifeless. Although I think I did alright with this rendered drawing it is still a little static. I am working towards a happy medium between the two.
Here is an older drawing done more loosely.

Thank you. I like that realism style too but it's very time consuming!
For me the biggest hassle is practicing painting (vs a pencil and paper) so I keep this big canvas board ready on my desk if I have time to do some studies.

Cute doggies.
I can imagine that the realistic drawings are super time consuming but for me, the look it brings really pays off in the end

colour skull sketch. Trying to get used of using atypical colours schemes and still making them read as "real"

Indigenous man w/ peyote buttons (plant pot). Thinking about producing more of these or maybe something brand new along similar lines.

For painting practice I set up a still life with a replica skull and some interesting lighting. It took about 3 hours to complete this 8x10" painting.
Turned out not too bad. A bit blobby in some areas but after scraping it down with a palette knife it looks more unified (basically blurs everything)
I can do a comparison of painting with having kids (although i dont have kids)
You start out with fantastic hopes on what your painting will become. How it will impress everyone with its brilliance and in turn make you look really good.
Then you begin; and after a not-too-bad start things end up going a little sideways and not according to plan. You think maybe I should a have never started and consider getting rid of the thing and doing something else.
You struggle and then make compromises and finally stop striving for perfection, you just move things forward.
After much frustration and also some moments of triumph, you sit back and see that it all turned out ok. Maybe not the best but at least not completely fucked up. Plus there is always the next painting anyways.
Ok some steps/ Ran out of upload space. Ill load the final later.

I forgot to post the final! I hung this one on the wall by my desk, a kind of memento mori in case I forget.
