Glacier NP This Summer
    #25791495 - 02/04/19 07:01 PM (4 years, 11 months ago)

Pumped, just made a 8 day camping reservation in Glacier NP this summer. I'm divorced, so every summer my daughter and I hit the road.Terrific quality time, especially since I live 1800 miles from her.

Last year was Yellowstone, year before  that was Arches,Canyonlands,The year before was Zion and Bryce. Next year will be Yosemite.

I prefer to make camping reservations, as opposed to hoping there's an open spot in the park with the first come first served spots, especially driving 900 miles each way,but All the NP pretty much sell out reserved camping by February. Crazy.

Anywhoo- any recommendations, great hikes? We are in shape, I live in the Rockies, so 12-15 mile hikes at high altitude are regular for me.

Sounds like an exciting trip.  You guys backpacking, car camping, pack in base camp and hiking around?  It's been about 4 years since I've been to Glacier.
It was beautiful.  Sorry I don't remember any specific trails, but I hope you guys have a blast!  Don't forget bear spray.

This trip will be car camping, with multiple day hikes. Still have plenty of bear spray from Denali, and Yellowstone. Hitting the age where I enjoy my air mattress, coolers, and a Weber patio grill, lol. Base camp, sleep like a baby, eat like a champ, knock out some vertical during the day.

Last year, I wanted to do Yellowstone and Glacier back to back, but after I booked Yellowstone in January, tried for Glacier in Mid Feb, reserved camping sold out.  Sucks, cause Glacier was only 6-7 hours more. Now we have to do 16 hours. Daughter is 15, she's been  to 47 states, Alaska included. Arizona, Hawaii, and Montana the last 3.

Funny, after Yellowstone, she still had 4-5 days out here, I said "  Honey,I know we just unpacked, but what do you think about going down to Taos,NM, do 2-3 days camping?" She says if it's under 8 hours- I'm in". So we repacked the car and took off for a quick trip.  " Dad, pretty cool out here, I'm glad your happy, and I love visiting. However, can we wait another year or so before we go to rock country again? I like the trees and lakes" talking about Bryce,Zion,Arches,Canyonlands.

Not into reservations, usually an extra fee attached,as opposed to just showing up,never been there in the summer, spent a winter in whitefish ,watch out for the bears ,I try to stay out a grizzly territory, although I did 3 or 4 summer s in ak  ,did get swiped in the head by momma bear above girdwood ,that was a rush ,black bear and cub

That's heartwarming.  I'm so excited for you guys to get out to some more trees and lakes!  Hopefully you get to see some cool wildlife.  I got into ultralight backpacking a few years back.  While it's not as comfy as a big inflatable mattress and a weber grill it get's me out to places that I wouldn't enjoy otherwise.  It's nice to carry less than 20 lbs with food and water on a 6 day trip!  I'm really looking forward to heading down to Moab for a mountain biking trip this spring.

If you have a specific place that you want to camp it's worth booking ahead of time.  It sucks to show up day of your trip and find out that the only camp site available is on the other side of the park in a place that you don't really give a shit about anyways.  As a backpacker it's even more pertinent to book in advance because you need to make sure that you have a camp site at each of the camps along your route.  If I don't want to make reservations I don't go to a National Park.  I go to a state park, BLM, National Forest etc.

I tend to do BLM land, as there are tons out here, unlike the East. With a 15 year old, and a 16 hour drive, camping reservations are a no brainier, and actually, Glacier is $23 a night. The popular parks like Yellowstone,Yosemite,Grand Canyon, even Rocky National, your chance of getting a non reserved camping spot, inside the park is probably less then 10%. It nice to know that at we have a spot before our 1000 mile journey. If I was solo, I might wing it, but I'm not wasting hours on end after a 16 hour drive looking and hoping to find a spot in an extremely popular park. Added stress, for what should be a terrific time. Nor do I want to camp outside the park. If you have kids, you know planning is key for big trips. Winging it, when my time with my daughter is limited, is not an option in my book.

I did NOLS way back when, my daughter did a 21 day Outward Bound in Colorado, 122 miles, all above 10,000 ft when she was 12. Not our first rodeo, lol.
