The OFFICIAL Flow Hood Porn Thread 2

With an ever growing number of us raising our game to flow hoods, I thought it would be nice to see them all in one spot. I had to dig pretty deep to find lots of different designs when I was looking for inspiration to build mine. From simple to glamorous, post your hoods here so others may be inspired.
Old or new, dig 'em out your journals, lets see some flow joe!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So I finally grew tired of a shitty SAB and got a good connection on a blower that I felt confident I could match to some filters I had been watching on ebay. Oddly enough, the blower came from a dude I struck up a conversation with in a bar that owned a HVAC company. It seems that most HVAC companies have a few scrapped blowers lying around and if you're friendly enough they'll let you take your pick for scrap cost, or in my case free. This guy was even cool enough to spend a few minutes with me talking CFM, wiring, etc. I picked one with a 3 speed motor capable of pushing out 400-800-1200 CFM.

Go big or go home, eh?
I pulled out the motor and squirrel cage from the house and washed down the cage and housing as best I could and took compressed air to the motor. Reassembled and straightened out any dents.
I pretty much worked from the center out when planning the size and design of the hood starting with the filter thickness, plenum and a tapered workspace with a 4" overhead light. My blower housing is 12.5" wide which was a pretty tight fit for my design with a 12.5 plenum, 11.5 filter, and 16" floorspace to work on. The gasket material for the blower is surplus rubber mat I'm using for the table top the hood now sits on.

As I went along I "dry fit" everything with the intention of taking it all apart for sanding, finishing, fixing fuck ups and silicone.
Oops! This was a plunge cut kickback when cutting a side window. It's out of view mostly so it's gonna be a wood putty fix. Fuck buying another 3/4" sheet of Birch plywood.

Starting to look like something SCIENCY!

Now here comes the forged in fire part. I built my home bar with this same technique and I get lots of compliments on it so what the hell. The beauty is fire is random so you don't too be careful about how intense or consistent you scorch the wood. If I see a grain pattern I like I'll linger a little longer on it to bring it out more. After the torch scorch it gets a half-ass sanding and 1 or 2 coats of amber shellac. My bar top got 10 coats but it needed to be water resistant. This is mainly cosmetic.
 After Shellac
Let's paint this bitch laboratory white and put in some SCIENCY plexiglass!

Firin' up some trim

Ohhhh yeeeah...

This thing was heavy as fuck and barely fit through doorways to get it in the house so that's why you see the painters tape. I damaged a little trim I need to glue back on. Wifey gave me the stink eye dragging in this beast.
I used c10's build as a model so I can't take much credit for the design. Thanks for the inspiration! Just tweaked it a little. I have some more info on CFM, pre-filter and wiring but I'm bored with typing so ask questions if you like.

Agreed. I believe I've seen inski's before. Mine is due for a little maintenance, the plexiglass workspace has been bulging and cracking in a couple spots. May be the alcohol misting pre-work. When I decide it's time to do some repairs I'm going with stainless.

Very cool finish on your hood Grim! I've never seen that before. Gotta say I'd be scared to do that, id be afraid it wouldnt look right. Takes an artistic eye to get it, which I dont have lol great job Grim!
I'm in the middle of my build right now, filter is 18×24×11.5....
Although there are some some REAL nice builds here, not sure it would even compare to them. Some real beauties guys!

Good thinking Grim! I’ll be starting my build very soon. I made a design and my son decided it wasn’t good enough lol so I’m waiting for him to have time to help me.
Here’s some links I’ve found though. Boris-My Homemade Flow Hood C10’s Flow Hood Bods easy AF Laminar Flow Hood

Rombino if you don't mind, keep some notes so others may benefit from your build. Some want the fastest, most cost effective route to their own FH while others want to add their own personal touch. Any build design can help those wanting to weigh what they want or need.
Shaper - thanks for the links and good luck with your build. Mine was actually modeled around c10's build but it's pretty deep down the rabbit hole to find it.

Not at all, I pd 115 for it on enay, shipping was pricey though, 47 bucks.... So 162 total. Its 99.97% efficient and .79 WG. I really wanted a 5-6" thickness, was going nuts looking, I'm SURE they're out there, I just couldn't find one without having to buy 4 of em lol so my box is alot bigger then I'd wanted, but I got over that quick enough!
