Music Theory - Using mathematics
    #2578966 - 04/19/04 07:30 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

I'm trying to find some good resources on this subject, something I've recently wanted to read more about.  So, if anyone has good book titles, websites, yadda yadda yadda feel free to enlighten me  :heart:

Blastrid said that Jinx is fairly knowledgeable on this subject, so maybe he can chime in with some knowledge to share...hmmm where's that pleading and begging Icon at when you need it!

:grin:

I've already suggested the first two to you Danny, but maybe others interested would find these helpful too:

Music, Cognition, and Computerized Sound;
An Introduction to Psychoacoustics
edited by Perry R. Cook

The Cosmic Otave;
Origin of Harmony
by Hans Cousto

Helpful websites:
Approximate Traditional Western Frequencies
Inharmonic Frequency Calculator

MIDI files of different mathematical concepts

Musical Temperaments and Ratios

Library of Halexandria - Music

Circle of Fifths.

hmmnn... :scratching goatee:
i think i'll use that as a song title.

the image Blasto posted goes deeper...
it's from Drunvalo's Sacred Geometry Coloring Book.

something to do w/ the 6+1 Universe and the 12+1 dimensions.

here we go:

something about the 7/12 time signature that makes one have visions...

Those are awesome Jinx!

Yeah, I noticed that that design is the Seed of Life/Fruit of Life. I haven't reached full understanding of the .gif I posted, and how music is related that way to space/time.

I'm attempting my music to be adjusted to correct resonant frequencies (i.e. C# = 136.1 Hz) for aesthetic, personal, and obvious natural, true reasons.
I'm also slowly attempting "odd" time signatures to evoke certain feelings in a desired situation. Such as going from duple to triple gives one a sense of swaying and additional drive, at the very least.

Using common mathematical ratios can be applied in endless ways in music. Try finding a ratio sequence and building a chord off of it, or plane chords along the sequence, or do significant events on each minute mark of the sequence, etc. etc. Proportions of a song could fit certain well known mathematical proportions (study Bartok, Debussy, or even Beethoven [some say]).

Numbers and music go together like Grandma and a dish of hard candy.

I'll post more w/ more research, maybe excerpts from the books I've got.
