Jooce's Masters Mix Substrate TEK * 1
    #25788116 - 02/03/19 02:17 PM (3 months, 16 days ago)

UPDATING THIS TEK: USING LESS WATER THIS TIME AND A DIFFERENT CULTURE... STAY TUNED

This is my TEK on how to make the Master's Mix substrate for most wood loving mushroom species. I'm using it for Oysters (Don't use this for shitakes, they like the normal woodchips/bran recipes).
I decided to make this TEK because a lot of noobies always ask about substrate and how to mix it.
I was there too just a few months ago, so I figured this would be helpful.
I'm going to make this short and simple for you guys.

First and foremost I did not create this recipe!

I learned about it through watching YouTube videos made by T.R. from Earth Angel Mushrooms and other members on here who use it religiously.
The yields of this mix are generally higher than other substrates. It does take a little while longer to colonize depending on conditions, but I've heard of 2# first flushes with this stuff on a 5# block!

Now, if I've still got your attention let's get into the process of making it!

SUPPLY LIST:

• Kitchen scale (For measuring weight of HWFP/Soybean Hulls/Water)

• Something to weigh the materials in (I use a lemonade pitcher)

• Something to scoop the pellets up with to put into the pitcher (I use a big PYREX measuring cup)

• Hardwood Fuel Pellets (DO NOT USE SOFTWOOD)

• Soybean Hulls

Hot Water (Breaks up pellets easier than cold water)

• Mushroom grow bags (I use .5 micron filters)

• Sterilizer or PC (I use a 55-gallon steam sterilizer. Another member on here helped me figure out how to build one, here is his TEK if you need/want to build one.SHROOMSISAY01 55 GALLON STEAMER TEK.)

MIXING THE SUBSTRATE:

For this recipe you do a 50/50 mix, 50% HWFP and 50% Soybean Hulls. You then hydrate to 60% volume. For a 5# block you mix 1# of HWFP/1# Soybean Hulls/3# of water.

I make enough for 10-12 bags at a time by using 4 5-Gallon buckets.

Each Bucket starts with 3# of Soybean hulls that I hydrate with 4.5# of water (That's 1.5# of water per 1# Soybean hulls per the 5# block recipe). I make 4 of these initial buckets and let them soak overnight because they are harder to break apart than the HWFP. I mix them thoroughly to ensure they are all hydrated and leave them to sit overnight.

When I get up in the morning I do the same process with the HWFP. I weigh out 3# of HWFP and mix with 4.5# of water in each 5-gallon bucket. I mix these up after they have sat for a while. You want to get them broken up pretty good so there are no chunks.

Now I double check my Soybean Hulls to make sure there aren't any chunks of pellets left in there. If they're all good you can now mix the HWFP and Soybean Hulls together.

You mix them 50/50, make sure you mix them good so there aren't just random patches of HWFP or Soybean hulls. That can cause problems making the substrate too hot, which may lead to contamination. You can use a mixer or whatever to get this done, I do it by hand which obviously takes longer.

Now you just bag them up. I use the lemonade pitcher on my scale and weigh out 5# for each bag. EZPZ.

Bag them, fold the flap over and load them into your pc or sterilizer. I let mine cook at 210 degrees for at least 12 hours. Once they cool for a couple days you're ready to inoculate! I use about a cup of spawn per 5# bag.

THE RESULTS:

I inoculated 12 bags with P. Pulmonarius on 1/31/19 and then I inoculated a second batch of 12 with P. Ostreatus (Blue oyster) on 2/5/19.

P. Pulmonarius 2/3/19 (3 days after inoculation)

P. Pulmonarius 2/6/19 (6 days after inoculation)

P. Ostreatus 2/6/19 (2 days after inoculation) The top are Ostreatus and the bottom are Pulmonarius.

P. Pulmonarius 2/9/19 (9 days after inoculation) The ones with lines drawn on them are showing how much the mycelium has grown from the last pictures on 2/6/19.

P. Ostreatus 2/9/19 (5 days after inoculation) The ones with lines show how significantly it has grown in just 3 days. And this is only 5 days in! My blues seem to like this cold weather a lot more than my Pulmonarius.

Both Species 2/9/19

P. Pulmonarius 2/12/19 (12 days after inoculation) Some of these are taking longer to colonize than I would like, that's my error. This is why it's important to mix the grain spawn properly throughout the bags!

P. Ostreatus 2/12/19 (8 days after inoculation) These ones were mixed properly and they are moving along a lot quicker, almost fully colonized. I thought my Pulmonarius would colonize it quicker since that's how it goes on agar and grain, but apparently not on the substrate!

So I have been a little busy and haven't uploaded for a week. My bad, but here are some pictures! The P. Pulmonarius has taken about 3 weeks to fully colonize, but I believe its because of the 60-70 degree weather we've been having. My P. Ostreatus, however, took off extremely fast and were done colonizing the blocks in like 12-14 days. The Pulmonarius has started to show primordial/fruits and the Ostreatus has just started showing primordia.

All of these pictures were taken on 2/20

P. Ostreatus

P. Pulmonarius (Found these popping up still in the bag yesterday, opened them up to give the some FAE.)

Fruiting Chamber 2/23

Harvesting the first couple bags and waiting on more 2/25
(First 2 Pulmonarius bags pulled 1 1/4# off the first flush which is about half of what I would have liked to pulled, but I believe the cold weather and my slow reaction to the pinning influenced this. The blues will probably be yielding where I want them.)

Look at these Ostreatus :lookatit: (That's more like it!)

2/26 I have harvested close to 6 lbs off of 5 Blue blocks already, the next ones I need to harvest look significantly bigger than the previous ones too. I have already sold all the mushrooms I've grown, people are eating them up!

Blue Brat first flush total harvest weight 12# from 12 Blocks 2/28

Now this is only 50% BE on a first flush but I feel like I'm going to get up to 75% with this second flush. Each block did produce a fatty 1# cluster which was super nice! I'll take it considering this is just a novelty variety and not a commercial producing strain like the 3015 I'm about to inoculate next week! I'll keep it updated with results.

Still waiting to harvest the last of the P. Pulmonarius, honestly the weight so far is nothing to write home about. Like I said it's been pretty cold here so I think that factors into the yield on both strains. It's also not a commercial strain either.

THE END

Thanks dude. :dancer:

I appreciate the AMU, have learned quite a few things there.

I have some bags that are about a week in now. Plan on posting some more pictures in the next day or 2 and then in a week when they're fully colonized. Then I'll post some fruiting pictures after that, I want pictures from all cycles!

Thanks for this! Do you have any recommendations for substitutes for Soybean Hulls? Or where a city girl may find some? (Home Depot/etc doesn't have'm)

I don't have any recommendations personally... I know a guy that uses beet pulp pellets when they can't get soybean hulls though. Apparently they work pretty good too. I also live in a city, maybe not as big of a city as you live in. I just looked up local feed stores and gave them a call so I could ask if they had them. I bought mine for about $7 for a 50# bag.

Another option is to use just plain straw or sawdust supplemented w/ bran. I have oat and wheat bran.

I'm telling you though, if you CAN find soybean hulls they are worth it. You may have to dig around... it took me a minute to find them, but now I've got the hookup lol.

Ok, ok, I'll make some calls. The last time I did this looking for rye I ended up in a deep rabbit hole with no results :laugh2:

I got mine from a health food store. Call them up. They use it for bread. They're also known as Rye Berries. That's what I asked for and they sold me a 25# bag for like $10-$15. Worth it. I've done like 5 batches of grain and I still have over half the bag.

Excited to see this one almost finished so I can move onto some other things. I have some 3015 that I'm about to put to grain today too. I also have a plan to mess around with breeding a bit too, thinking about documenting that.
