Trip Report – July 28, 2018. Lift off at 13:00, CEST.
Setting: Posh hotel room in Amsterdam. I was alone for the trip, although my girlfriend said she’d come and check on me after she got done with work.
The day before my trip, I bought two 15g packages of Atlantis truffles, along with some dark chocolate since I wasn’t sure how I’d react to the taste. I put both packages in the hotel mini fridge for the next morning.
Morning of the trip, I had a light breakfast of some croissants and coffee around 8am. I picked up a couple bottles of water for during, and a bottle of OJ to help come down after. I had a couple different Spotify playlists setup, some trippy techno stuff, and some light instrumental stuff.
T-15, shut off my phone and took the hotel phone off the hook so I wouldn’t be disturbed. Pulled the curtains, and started up some music, trippy techno stuff first. I was also a little concerned that things might get scary, so I had brought a little stuffed monkey toy with me. I figured if I got scared, maybe I could focus on the cute little monkey and make things better.
T+0, ate one whole 15g box, leaving the other in the mini fridge. Set an alarm on my Kindle for 90 minutes to check on the dose. Sat down at the desk to write. The taste of the truffles wasn’t nearly as bad as I’ve heard. Like walnuts in both taste and texture. Didn’t need the chocolate bar.
T+20 minutes, still feeling nothing at all. T+25 minutes was beginning to get bored. T+28 minutes my hands started getting sweaty. T+30, like clockwork it started to kick in. I started feeling heavy and a little far away. I switched the music to a playlist I found of all of the Lord of the Rings soundtracks pulled together, and laid down on the bed.
I guess there’s some truth that your first trip is never what you expected. This was a lot more crazy fun and less spiritual or introspective than I thought it would be. But completely real and vivid hallucinations. Many moments of pure joy. And sensation! My god the sheer pleasure of sensory overload!
Some overall themes, vocals were distracting me. Pretty early on, I switched to the mostly instrumental LOTR soundtracks. Echoes of people talking in the hallway were weird, especially since most of them weren’t in English. I kept getting a sense of that very first Mardi Gras that I went to. We showed up on this part of St. Charles Ave where there were almost no people, way before the parades started. This sense of anticipation and newness and not being sure if you’re in the right place or not. That image kept coming back over and over.
There were episodes in my trip, punctuated with brief returns to the real world. Although how real the real world was varied greatly.
The first episode lasted only ten minutes of real time, but felt much longer. I laid down on my bed and closed my eyes and the CEV patterns started kaleidoscoping around my head. Swirling patterns of black and grey and red. I got back up and wrote for a minute, then laid back down with the stuffed monkey.
I had the monkey on my chest as I laid back. I figured if I had a bad trip, he could help bring me out of it. I was looking at him, and then there were two of him. I was half lucid at this point and realized it was my focus going, but that lucidity faded fast. I remember asking him how he did that and who his friend was and if he’d teach me how to do that. Then there were 3 of him, and they were spinning around. I was trying to reach out with my hands to see which ones were real. Then I saw my fingertips were glowing, and I realized that the magic was inside of me. Sunlight was streaming in and when I touched my fingers to my head, it blocked the sun and the visions started to come. I remember my monkey’s friend asking me if I wanted to see something cool. I said yes and pulled the covers over my head. Colors came alive. Reds and blues. It was like a dance of silk scarves everywhere. So many colors breathing in and out. I felt like there were people dancing under the silks, but I couldn’t see them.
I remember coming out from under the covers and seeing the monkey looking at me and saying “Oh! I see!” I think this was around T+1 hour. I remember thinking that I didn’t need to boost the dose. And that the mini fridge seemed really far away (in real life it was about 6 feet from the end of the bed).
I had another vivid color sequence. I remember coming out and looking at the clock – 14:28, and thinking “No, I don’t need more.” Then the alarm on my Kindle went off at 14:30 – I never use the alarm on the Kindle and I remember thinking it was such a cute noise for an alarm! And then I got up and got the second box of truffles.
I remember thinking it was a good thing I didn’t have a knife or scissors to open the sealed baggie because I was afraid I’d cut myself. And I remember using my teeth and feeling feral and cannibalistic. Somehow I had the presence of mind to know I didn’t want the whole box and poured out just a bit into the empty first box – looking back at what was left over afterwards, I think I ate another 5-7g – and I hid the rest from myself under a paper baggy. I was chowing down on the truffles, and then this Enya song from FOTR came on. And suddenly I was overwhelmed by the beauty of the truffles. I kept studying them in the light, and they seemed to glow. I ate them very slowly and reverently. I drank some water and loved the way the water droplets played over the inside of the bottle. I put the empty truffle box on the nightstand, and perched the monkey on top of it. The truffle box turned into a train, and the monkey started floating off on the train into the clouds. Then he came back, and I asked his friend where he was going to take me this time.
The next set of visions were intense. I was in Egypt under the pyramids. Then I was in Ancient Aztec Mexico. I remember lots of glowing colors, particularly on the headbands of people I would see. Lots of bright blues.
Sometime during this, I got up to pee. While I was going, the toilet got dark and started talking to me. The bathtub was beckoning me to see what dark wonders were in there. I got scared and retreated back to the safety of the bed.
Sometime later, there’s a song from the ROTK soundtrack called The Green Dragon Inn, which has Merry and Pippin singing. That song invaded my dream, and the monkey and I were watching them sing and dance. And I remember looking at the monkey and saying “It’s so cool that you know those guys!”
I remember having this strong vision of the monkey all curled up, and hearing this voice say “This is so important and must be protected at all costs!” And in my mind, I knew the voice was talking about child-like innocence.
I wasn’t me for a lot of the time after I boosted the dose. Sometimes I was dead and watching from outside my body – but I remember even at the time thinking that this was trite. There was another part where I was in a secret government experiment where they put you into someone else’s childhood to live part of their life to get a better understanding of other people. I remember being put in my girlfriend as a kid. During that time, in real life, my girlfriend stopped by to check on me, and I couldn’t tell if she was really there or if it was the vision.
She stayed with me for 30 minutes or so. I remember her telling me it was 16:00 (T+3 hours) when she left, and to call her later. I drifted for a long time, and then checked the clock and it was 16:15.
I was starting to have trouble seeing my monkey’s little friend. But we went on one more trip. As I was coming back to Earth, I heard these song lyrics “The world has changed forever,” and I remember thinking that was so profound. Only 6 minutes has passed in real time, it was now 16:21.
By 16:30, I was truly back in my own body. I had some orange juice and some stroopwaffle. And I jotted down a bunch of notes in my journal, which is how I pieced this whole thing together. I had tried to keep notes during, but after 45 minutes in, I couldn’t hold the pen anymore.
Unfortunately, I came down with a really nasty foodborne infection right after this, and it sidelined me for months. I ate most of my meals in Amsterdam with friends, and none of them got sick. So either it was on the truffles, or it was from something else I ate that day, or maybe the breakfast place the next day. That was a huge downer, and why it took me so long to share this. I still think I’d do it again, part of me really wants to see what a crazy high dose is like. And I’d also like a more spiritual trip than this one was, as well.
Thanks to everyone who gave me advice and shared stories and helped make this experience possible! Special shout out to Aldebaran and his amazing Truffle FAQ!
