DIY Flow Hood - looking for help on the maths
    #25784088 - 02/01/19 03:16 PM (4 years, 11 months ago)

Hi all, I'm seeking some help on the math & calculation side of building my flow hood. I've watched the Freshcap Mushrooms videos on making a flow hood, but could use some help working through the calculation. Partly because I'm not quite sure how to read the specs on the HEPA module I purchased, and partly because I'm no electrician and honestly have no idea what I have.

It looks like what I have is the filter + fan blower? All the DIY builds I've seen go over calculating the fan CFM and WG, which is where I get lost and could use some help. Looking at the module, is my WG 0.37 or 0.26? The label is a bit confusing to read. Getting to the prefilter, fan (if needed), etc what should I get and any ideas on installation?

My elevation is ~5300ft (if that matters). Thanks for the help, I realize my questions are a bit all over the place.

What you have here is a fan filter unit. Usually installed in the ceiling of a clean room.
There are users successfully using these as a flow hood.
All the math has been done by the manufacturer. It SHOULD work as is.

The issue you have now is powering it.
That motor is 277v.
I don't know where in the world you are. Home electricity (in the US canada at least) is 110-120v.

Hopefully a better electrician will come by with some real advice.

Thanks! I'll make sure to get an electrician to weigh in. Do you know how I could find users who are using these? I'm wondering about prefilters -- which ones to use, and how they might affect the pressure, and motor/FPM.

I know Inski (a trusted cultivator) uses one, but his has been "highly modified".

Do a search for "fan filter unit" on here, 663 results.

I use a furnace filter from home depot as a pre-filter. It looks like you should be able to get one that slides right into that frame on the back. It's function is just to trap the big stuff (dust, hair, etc)so the fan and filter last longer. I doubt it will make a noticeable difference in flow.

You posted in the DIY section, but if it's about growing fungi it belongs in the cultivation forum (you'll get more responses there too).

Oh yeah,
And welcome to the shroomery!

277V is for 3-phase wiring like in industrial applications. You need a step-up transformer 115/120 to 227 to run it on your domestic US/Canadian supply. Make sure it's rated at at least 500VA. It's okay if it's an autotransformer.

277 is a single tap off of three phase used for lighting. The step up converter will cost more than the entire FFU did
