I'm starting a urban edible farm this year! * 1
    #25780737 - 01/31/19 08:04 AM (4 years, 11 months ago)

So strange that in 2 decades here I have rarely been into this forum, and that is about to change dramatically lol

So we just secured a space to grow a decent little urban farm, the next step is designing the space to be efficient, clean and a great little space for my lab.

I'm going to lean on people who know their stuff to help me make sure my design, use of space and anything else that comes up is done as best as I can do it, without spending a crazy amount of money.

It's weird that Iceland has no one growing edibles other than one farm that supplies all the white buttons in Iceland; so this should be quite the adventure.

A thousand years ago vikings chopped down most of the forests on Iceland, now it's time to use chop down the remaining trees for mushrooms? ;p

Check out Eric Myers/Myers Mushrooms on youtube, he has some good info for setting up a small farm. A decent lab would be nice, because I think you will be dependent on keeping viable cultures and making your own spawn.

Good luck!

You know ive had the idea of hooking up some HEPA filters to a shed to create a giant sterile environment, idk if it would work or not but could be interesting for growing bulk mushrooms without losing a giant bench of mushrooms (alot of farmers use these long tables filled with substrate to fruit)

So who would you guys recommend for say Elm Oyster, I need a good source for a solid culture that I can use as my main grow.

I've heard Aloha Medicinals (Elm A I believe), any other ones that are not crazy expensive lol

Mycelia is the only place that sells commercial cultures.  Other than that amycel 3015 is a much better strain than elm for commercial growing.  Anything mycelia sells will be commercial grade,  but a blue or grey oyster is the best yielding variety you can grow.

I will clarify that on soyhulls , lions mane and chestnuts can yield as much as blue oyster.  Theyre usually harder to sell in bulk though

Iceland is a unique situation, there is almost no market for anything other than white buttons and portabello's in the supermarkets.

There has only been 1 farmer who grew for about 7 years until last year, he sold 90% Elm and 10% shiitake near the end, all bought up and sold to the restaurants by his distributor.

So I will for sure grow blue and pink, I want to offer a mixed box of Oysters to get more demand from the Chefs.

I'll just grab the Amycel, hear far too many good things about them.

Amycel for blue oyster? I already have some stuff coming from Taylor's Mushrooms

Also curious did you all see this?

yeah .. pitching a colorful pink and blue box will be great to appeal you customer and making a niche in the market as well. However blue and pink may require different growrooms with different temperature setup. you can also add Yellow P. citrinopileatus in the same grow room with the pinks and to the your box.

Yeah, I have a lot of testing ahead of me, clearly, I have to focus on the main oyster grow, then add in the other strains to see how they work out since I will only have 1 decent size grow room to begin with.

This is so awesome. I can’t wait to see how you progress.

It’s wonderful that you have such a wide open market really nice looking mushrooms have a way of selling themselves so I bet you won’t have any problem marketing them!

My mushroom hobby and experience has been on deep freeze for quite some time, but I finally moved into a new place in a new state where I have room to really go for it, so in the coming months I too am going to start procuring equipment and materials to begin a mushroom farm (low volume production to begin) for selling locally.

I’m excited to compare notes with someone in a similar position!
