G2G transfer advice

Hi all,

Thanks to everyone for all the helpful guides, and apologies if this has already been asked.

I have some partially spawned grain injected with spores a week ago.

Now that there appears to be a bit of white mycelium on most grains can I now do a G2G transfer to jars of rye or do I wait until fully colonised? If the answer is wait then why is this?

EDIT: I of course meant partially colonised. It is not entirely white. There are areas that have been mixed amongst the grain

That's up to you. I mean one grain could g2g another jar lol. But I mean I would wait... waiting and you're able to do more jars.. add more grain for faster colonization and whatnot.

Your grain is almost fully colonized in a week?  Ive always went agar to grain but that seems too fast.

If you did spores to grain and it's colonized in a week it's almost assuredly contaminated

Also wtf if partially spawned grain?

Opening grains before they're fully colonized(anymore than the bare necessity of an initial G2G) exposes them to unnecessary risk of contamination. Transferring spawn that's not fully colonized is that much less inoculation. Just wait until it's fully colonized.

Multispore to grain is a crap shoot at the best of times. There are easy methods to making sure you're starting with a relatively clean culture.

Hi. I didn't say it was fully colonised. It has areas of white which I have mixed in. My thinking was tgat if I can mix it to encourage faster colonisation then why not just mix it and do a G2G?

Thanks for the helpful reply. Agar will be my next step I think. I've used a grow kit and spores bought online. I'm now using my own grain with bought spores in monotub. I'm going to change one variable at a time to be able to spot errors. If successful I'll spore print and become entirely self sufficient. I'd like to give a shout out to bods vids and guides btw

After inoculating grain by any method of inoculation - consider it off limits for opening until it's 100% colonized. Otherwise you're just shooting yourself in the foot. It will certainly not make things go faster to G2G a half colonized grain jar and it opens up to risk of contaminating and/or stalling the existing culture. A jar that's fully colonized you can also have pretty good idea just from looking at it whether there is any kind of contamination that you would be passed along to all of your receiving jars - that is not the case with a half colonized jar. If it's contaminated you want to know that before your next gen of spawn.

Thank you buddy. It's a few weeks off full colonisation. Seems like patience is the hardest part of the game

Haha, yeah no prob. It takes some getting used to - that you can't actively force them to grow faster. Sitting there with a whip. Hurry up and wait.
