Psilocybin and psilocin are both plenty water soluble according to the Merck index.

The difference in solubility is probably 1000 fold between the the freebase and the salt. Psilocin is a lipid soluble substance (hydrophobic) and given the choice at the interface between water and a lipid membrane (say of a cell) it will diffuse into the membrane and not the water.

If you look at the profile of psilocin in the monograph it is soluble in all the normal organic solvents and sparingly soluble in water. That is the profile of a substance that will resist going into water at all costs.

I wish I could find the paper that described their procedure for extracting psilocin and psilocybin from a mushroom. They discussed the problem of getting both compounds out with one solvent since they have almost opposite solubility profiles. I think they used methanol.

Edit this may be the abstract

Psilocin has similar solubility to bufotenine and there's a lot more information on that here.

idk if that'll help you on your scientific mushroom quest but there ya go

Very typical of amines is water solubility decreases as molecular weight increases

I'm still reading, but if freezing breaks the cell wall wouldn't it be a good idea to freeze before making an extract or tea?

Edit: Is the actives in the mushrooms bound to a salt? I would think that's why it's water soluble while being rated as insoluble as the base form would be insoluble

Nope, freezing fresh actives (not completely cracker dry) renders them inactive.

Hmm, and they have a lot more alkaloid content and are already growing in a cold environment. I just know from that time a friend and I did the frozen cubes picked on the gulf coast (Galvaston TX.) that they did not work. He froze them fresh because it was summer and they were getting mushy because he had picked so many and stupidly put them in a plastic bag as well.

That's what my shroom guy said too, I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong but my first 5 trips were all tea and maaaaaybe got me to a level 2. Same with my wife. They ranged from 1.5g - 3.5g and all felt very similar, pretty underwhelming.

We both gave up on tea quite a long time ago and just eat them now. Eating them has always produced MUCH greater results for us. I wish I could make a good tea. I follow the recipes and people talk about it like it's easy but I can't get it to work. Sucks because sometimes I don't want to set aside a whole day to trip.

What recipe are you using to make the tea?
Are you chopping your shrooms up into TINY pieces when making tea?

Also you’re not dosing high enough?  1.5g?  I had some tea a couple weeks ago and dosed 13g

I used one I found on here back when I first was getting into shrooms but that was a couple years ago.

If I remember right - I ground up my shrooms very fine in a coffee grinder and after getting a rolling boil for a few seconds I took the water off, poured it into mugs and added my shrooms. After letting it steep, squeezed out the remains, I added lemon juice, and drank.

I've dosed up to 3.5g in tea and felt effects, just not very strong. I mean when I made 3.5g tea it was nothing compared to eating the same amount. My wife, who trips with me every time, also did not feel very strong effects until we ate them months later.

At the time I was on a light zoloft dose which may have changed things, but I also was on the same dose when I ate them.

It's pretty hard for me to find shrooms so I'm afraid to risk trying to make a good tea and wasting them until I have more access. I've also weened off the zoloft so maybe that will change things

Freezing fresh mushrooms is pointless, although it doesnt hurt them any the psilocin and psilocybin are readly water soluble (especially in acidic solutions like lemon tek) the only point to freezing i could see is you can freeze tea to store it or if you didnt have a dehydrator you could freeze the mushrooms then pull them out like a big icicle and make tea with them

Try freezing fresh cubes and post results on activity, please! I am certain it ruins the alkaloids in cubes if they are frozen fresh and then thawed. Maybe a tea might work if frozen cubes are placed in boiling water directly, I don't know, but we all need to find out, lol.

Not true as even you have stated... It's when it's thawed, but if one used the mushrooms direct from the fridge before they thaw and expose all the actives trapped in ice to air causing it to be destroyed. If anything freezing it preserves it before thawing destroys it...

That said I'll clarify. Freeze before extract/tea of FRESH mushrooms without thawing before prep should cause the cell walls to break making it that much easier to release the actives?

I already know the results of freezing active mushrooms. Like I said everybody in the 70's used to freeze there fresh mushrooms after picking and make tea with the frozen block of mushrooms and it worked totally fine, some people even used a deep freezer and they were still very much potent

I'm not asking if it will work, but if it would be worthwhile especially more so for extraction than tea even though it applies to both as if it beans the cell wall as someone stated wouldn't that reduce the time needed to extract the actives from the fungus especially in very large batches that's hard to make sure EVERY fruit gets agitated to release their actives.

Sure it may help and extraction but for mushrooms you can just chop them up really small and that works very well to

I get that... The question becomes is it worth it like my example of extracting something like an oz+ for the actives not tea. Just was wondering I'm not trying to seek a tek out.
