First Time Caser
    #2577327 - 04/19/04 12:02 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

Hi, Im going to be starting to attempt casings I've only successfully grew mushies once and only got 1 flush off of about 6-8 cakes.

I would like to know if perlite for a humidity source would be needed or if the casings should be left alone in their fruiting chamber without a source of humidity I live in Ontario and am not too sure about the humidity in these parts. If I did use perlite I would use a very little amount just to give a little boost to the humidity and I would probably put a little in a cup or something like that.

Im going quite big with this grow op. so I need all the help I can get. We are planning on getting 8 tupperware bins and making 4 fruiting terraniums (aquarium heater stylez) and growing about 2-4 casings in each. Considering I've never even tried a casing before I consider this a pretty big risk. My buddies got all the money we need and Im the one doing the shit up he wants a pound by the end of the summer and I'm pretty much just hoping all goes well.

Its quite hard to find anything on this site about using perlite with casings so Im guessing that most casings do well on their own. Ill probably just use perlite in 1 bin to see what works best.

Could anyone give any helpful advice for a first time caser?

- Thanks

I think you need to read a bit more before going bulk....

But, anyway.....yes, you need additional humidity for casings. Not just a little 'cup'.

Good luck! I'm goign to attempt my first casing in a few weeks. My only advice is to do plenty of research. This site has a TON of useful information that will help you suceed with your first casing.

Ya.. I've read just about everything on this site about casings so I dont know what RuNe is talking about. If anything I need more expeirence with cakes before going bulk. From what I've read most people who grow casings dont use perlite and I dont have the patience or the money to use some other type of humidification source unless its some other type of rock/substance.

Hmmm.. Im wondering if I could just lay a big ass casing layer to the bottem of the four bins that way they provide their own humidity just fan daily and mist when needed. This way would probably use more substrate/myc. but it would be worth it if it worked.

"I dont have the patience or the money to use some other type of humidification "

I don't have a lot of experience growin either, so I'm not real sure about using perlite in casings, but I do know humidity is very important and your gonna need something. Maybe you should wait and get some more experience, don't be in such a hurry.

Put 1" of perlite on the bottom of your terrarium and 1/2" of water/peroxide, lay your tupperware on top.

If you're going for bulk you're going about it the wrong way.

And casings aren't difficult, I did two casings (two pints of BRF and vermiculite per casing, cased with plain vermiculite) for my very first grow (I just read everything I could on the Shroomery before I attempted it) and I got about four ounces dry.

Try spawning WBS or grain to poo/straw. And read the bulk grow section of the FAQ.

I would say learn by research first to avoid wasted time, but that's just me.

Sounds to me like you've done quite a lot of research and want to confirm a point before you start...

I don't use perlite (so I can't help much), but you have my vote of confidence, though

Good Luck!

Thanks, Mycocat I know that straw\poo would probably give me 4x the amount of shrooms I could get using this mythod but Im not really in for the risks and I'd rather get some casing expeirence under my belt before I go too hardcore.

How did you go about humidifying your first casing mycocat? and would you consider it a bigger risk to use a peat/verm/lime mixture instead of soley verm?
