Well I went ahead and dumped a few of my previous batch and they smelled slightly sweet. Hopefully its an issue related to not venting long enough rather than me contaminating everything some other way. The grain batch I'm cooking tonight will put the venting venue to rest if it still doesn't want to come clean. I also will increase my PC time to 2 hours instead of an hour and 30.
Time to review my procedure just in case.. I know its got plenty room to grow for sure anyway.

A sweet smell sounds like a result of fermentation due to a long soak to me... walk us through your prep... you use rye berries though right? Solid 2 hours will be better than 90 minutes either way... venting is likely more important

Mornin partner, spitball's traditional rye prep guide is what I have basically been doing. Just recently I checked out that RR grain prep video and its pretty much the same but alerted me to the notion that venting is important. I usually soak for 20 hours per the guide but it also says I could soak them as little as 8 or so.. I might give that a try. This morning I pulled the most recent batch out of the cooker and gave it a sniff, it smells pretty tasty, nothing sweet smelling so far but that doesn't mean much just yet I imagine.

8 hr soak and venting should make all the difference IMO

So I want to make slants of some cultures. Iβve seen several different methods on here. Anyone have a recommendation on which to use?

Making slants with frank
I just transferred out of 2 slants recently from cold storage since june, and they've recovered clean... the agar seemed to be in good condition still (not drying up)... I didn't bother with the wood

RRβs video on making slants is very similar to Frankβs. I included the lumber in mine, but havenβt had slants in storage long enough to see if it makes a difference. I went with 20x150 tubes and theyβre super easy to work with.

plain petri dishes last a couple years in the fridge. so I don't really bother with slants anymore.

Kind of what I was thinking: as wet as I make agar, and wrap it 4-5 times...

You should use pinpornproducer's wheat prep for your rye and see how it does. I bet it will work well

Nice, sounds easy enough. Making the masters, not boofing plates
When you go to use the master again, where do you transfer from?

Quick question.. my pastyplates got don in the pc last night. I was wondering if while i had them in my SAB do i have to have one of the holes covered or not. I have read both that you do need to or you dont have too.
Any input would be appreciated

One of the SAB holes? How you get both hands in there too work?
That's silly
Also, what's Don doing in your PC?
Two armholes, 2 arms... both hands needed to even open the plate... deduction will carry you great distances padawan

Do you think this PE looks ok. This is from Tomentose myc that I was in a hurry with. Its very vigorous and bright.

30 hours after a shake

Doesn't look good at all imo
Could you explain why, for those of us trying to learn please?
It doesn't look like a healthy jar does. Compare to healthy jar pictures. That way you can learn the difference too. The entire mycelium morphology looks off. To me nothing about that jar looks right
So ive shaken and spawned 2 jars of this crap. It was quite tough to break up and was a rubbery mycellium. On the upside it smelt like cubensis mushrooms. Im not holding up much hope but it would be nice to get a flush out of it. I will keep you posted. Come on the cockshrooms please grow (first try)
