Sterilizer vs. Pressure Cooker
    #25770236 -

Who has made the jump from using a PC to a sterilizer?
Was it worth it?
How quiet is your sterilizer?

I like to work in the night and sometimes the PC can be a bit loud.
I also really like the appeal of not needing to work on a stovetop if I get a stand for the sterilizer. :strokebeard:

the 25x takes forever to get to pressure. you can make a pressure cooker quiet by adding a little weight to the weight and then running it at 15 will make it not rattle and it will operate similarly to a sterilizer. if you have an all american pressure cooker you can convert it to a sterilizer really easy. the sterilizers with the built in elements like the 25x and 75x I feel are underpowered and take a long time to heat up. I like using a cooker on a propane burner or gas stove.

I think you can buy a portable camping burner for $20-30.

I work early am before while everyone is asleep. If you really pay close attention to your stove top temp you can get it stable right at or below 15 psi and it is not to loud.

I bought this hotplate last year to move from the kitchen stovetop. It works great with my AA #921 canner and now a new AA 1925X sterlizer. I can highly recommend it, and probebly way more versatile that the AA self-contained sterlizers.

I have an AA921 pressure cooker. I "upgraded" it to what is essentially a sterilizer.

It's super easy, just a few bux in parts. You just switch out the black rubber plug for a red high pressure plug, and unscrew the jiggle weight valve and screw in a stopcock valve instead.

I do like it much better as it is a lot quieter, I can get up to a much higher PSI,and it pulls a vacuum

I just use a hotplate if I'm away from the kitchen

they are silent aside from startup. which is ideal for me as I work with audio.  but the electric model holds 5 less jars than the regular 40 qt(21).

exactly. and cool down which is a bitch for bags.  propane is probably the most energy/time efficient.  there is also the back factor to consider.  fuck lifting a heavy pc filled with 20 jars full of wet grain!  Ive got my electric sterilizer on a dolly that rolls anywhere in my apt.  you could probly rig a 25qt up on a hotplate the same way but I dont think it would heat the 40 qt

I don't entirely understand, how does it pull a vacuum?

Also, is there another name the stopcock valve would be sold as? Not finding them online.

I think I've been running my stovetop too hot because my PC usually rattles semi-constant while at pressure, and reading around it looks like it should only rattle a couple times per minute.

I have 2- 75x, 1- 941 with a stopcock, and a 915 with a stopcock.

I prefer the stopcock to rattler. Had a rattler many years ago.

I like the 75x over the 941, why? I can put them on timers and don't have to babysit them and don't have to worry about the pressure getting too high. I can and actually do leave the house while they're running.

Yes they take longer to heat up and get up to pressure but the allow me MUCH more freedom while they operate.

:2cents:

I didn't buy a 2nd 75x because it sucks...

I don't know the physics behind it really, but with a typical pressure cooker as it cools it pulls in outside (contaminated) air. With a stopcock valve the air inside is pushed out as it cools (and no dirty air comes in), it holds a vacuum. Once you open the valve there is a rush of air that gets pulled in as the vacuum fills. If you have something inside that needs to stay sterile, you can let the PC cool and then move it in front of a flow hood when you break the vacuum- it will only be sucking sterile air in and you can remove whatever sterile object into sterile flow.

I forget where to get the stopcock and red high pressure plug (important), look for a site that sells spare AA parts like gauges and rattles

I like to open the stopcocks on my sterilizers when they reach 0, if I can. The pressure it fairly equal and the sterilizer doesn't pull in a bunch of air.

if you open them at 0 they absolutely will pull in a lot of air. you open them at zero the air/steam inside is at 212F. Opening at zero is how you would get the maximum amount of air entering your sterilizer.

In fact the same amount of air goes in as if you let it cool to room temperature and broke the vacuum. it just wouldn't rush all in at once.

if you open at 0 the pressure is equal(durr) but the temperature isn't your cooker is still burning hot, hot air cools it loses volume. air cooling from 212 to 70 loses about 40% of it's volume.

if you don't open at 0 they seal shut alot of the time. it actually says in the instructions to open immediately after sterilization and vent the pressure out of the stopcock to avoid this.  sauna anyone? I have to keep a mini sledge next to mine for when it does.  I do wheel it in front of the hood when I do tho.  if its just the rattling that u don't like and you can just put a stopcock on a presto I would do that  or add weight to your rattle.  I used to let my presto rattle for years because I was reading the damn instructions instead of thinking with my brain.  I just thought it would be too much pressure.  once I added more weight and it stopped I felt like an idiot,  but a happy idiot

Re: Sterilizer vs. Pressure Cooker [Re: TedsDead]
    #25771801 -

you shouldn't open immediately after sterilization with grain jars unless you want to potentially rip the filters off or shatter the jars.

you would do that with surgical instruments like scalpels and what not.

if you dump the pressure immediately at the end of sterilization and you have agar in there you're going to find a huge fucking mess on the inside

for sterilizing mycology stuff you should either open it at 0 then put it in front of your hood to cool so it sucks in filtered air. or let it form a vacuum then break the vacuum in front of your hood.

take a empty soda bottle and put the cap on then throw it in your fridge and notice that as air cools it shrinks in volume. or take a empty soda bottle and put it in your hot car on a hot day. then cap it. then bring it inside to normal room temperature. also notice it will crunch inwards. when your PC is at 212F and you open the stop cock air will continue to flow inwards until it stabilizes with the room temperature. This is the entire reason a vacuum does form if you don't open the stopcock at 0

yes. that was not supposed to be a recommendation. I only opened it at full pressure once for a second and I broke a jar.  just saying that there is alot of contradicting info in the instructions that can be confusing if not for all y'alls helpful feedback.

the instructions are clear and great if you're sterilizing medical tools or tattoo gun shit. otherwise they're not inclusive enough to go over what needs to be done for mycology stuff

yes, they are very clear. I suppose what I meant to say was that the info in them might contradict what one may already be familiar with as proper operating instructions as per mush-cult purposes. This could cause some confusion and apparently does as I've seen a couple people asking about the opening of the stopcock during sterilization on these models lately

That's why I invested in a hot plate, so I wouldn't have to shlep my PC up the stairs to set it in front of the hood heh
