I was looking as Windscribe. Is there one in particular that’s more trusted than others?

Unless you're watching child porn and know enough about opsec to actually be secure using a vpn.. using a vpn will only make you more suspicious based on your metadata profile.

What do you all think about Puffin web browser? It is supposed to use a vpn for everything that is browsed. Do you think it actually adds any anonymity or protection? Is it as good as a real vpn that you pay for?

Most popular VPN services have a free but limited version. Really you just need to read the ToS and privacy policy as well as check where the company is based. If they're in a country that is known for being 1984 status then they're not a good choice.

I would never trust a free vpn the safest bet is buy a cheap vps and setup openvpn on it. They can be had for as little as $1 a month. If you really wanna go the free route however would recommend using proxies instead discarding them at least daily. Here's a list of open proxies you can use just google using web proxies and your browser. https://pst.moe/paste/jiwmdf

If you use TOR without a VPN, you might as well call FBI and tell them what you are doing. Your ISP will see that you are connected to TOR without a VPN.
Perfect case here of a fool who did not use a VPN with TOR:

But if you don't use a VPN and someone decides to log all the IP's that visit a certain website, you're immediately profiled as an IP of interest.
Using a VPN makes it known that you care about privacy, but that doesn't necessarily put you at risk. They would need a warrant to request the records and unless you are already flagged for suspicion they're not going to have probable cause to dig through the records of every account using a VPN.

I don't doubt the nsa can get any logs they want and build a case in reverse finding clever ways to have obtained the info they nefariously obtained

I guess I feel safer knowing the only party that could access and reverse my data is the NSA instead of every web host or sniffer. And that in the case my personal traffic became a national security threat, at least they'd have to be clever to prosecute.
Most of the VPN's are hosted outside of the USA too, outside of the "five eyes" network of surveillance nations. I guess if you're paranoid enough the NSA can do anything, but putting my data in another country that they have no jurisdiction in is an extra safeguard.

Tor.
When it comes to "good and free" vpn, I wouldn't personally use a single one of them because of the way the actual VPN service works.
I'd suggest to use nordvpn, it's nearly free and you get to use it on multiple devices, they do not gather logs of any kind and they're under Panama jurisdiction so even if somebody comes asking after you, they're not obligated to even reply and even if they were, there's literally nothing to show since no logs policy.

How do y'all feel about ProtonVPN? I understand that protonmail is considered top-notch when it comes to email security(though I may be mistaken) but if that's the case, I would figure ProtonVPN would also be regarded in high esteem. They have a free vpn service along with an affordable paid vpn service.
I'm curious about y'alls opinions on protonvpn
