Could we be in a Quantum computer now?
    #25760994 -

I believe there is scientific reason to believe that we are already living in a simulated universe.

If you are new to this it sounds really bizarre. However, if you keep cool and take the hypothesis serious, and maybe see 'Butterflies are free to fly', Tom Campbells videos about his big TOE, etc I will argue that it is highly likely that it is already so

If in fact it is the case, it of course has many implications.

Here is a recent video I made... (and here link to the full video).

What is your take on this?

Good topic and presentation.

Individuals minds are scattered, but through cohesion and innovation, I believe the goal or inevitable outcome is that we build up into a state of resolving into the very cause of the entire worldy manifest.

In accordance with this theory, the microchipped computers as we know them are merely the figurative 'chips' in the grand machine, signposts and icons of the puzzle we are ultimately trying to figure - whether we realize that or not.

At risk of being entirely obvious, look at what the emergence and popularity of virtual reality devices are suggesting.

Everything is pointing towards the understanding and involvement in the fabrication of worlds.

more complexity than required, so, most likely, completely bunk.

the theories that imply that we are receiving consciousness generated outside of our own bodies takes the mechanics of consciousness into the occult, instead of making it more obvious.  AND it imposes (1) a mysterious radio receiver AND (2)a mysterious broadcasting agency.

AND it also imposes (3)a complete mystery about a "creator" of the broadcast.

all of that because it is not easy to understand that we are each conscious of our own accord and that the phenomenon is biophysically close to understandable now, without adding 3 unlikely and strange things that have very low likelihood of being true, and which none of his peers (in physics) will acknowledge as possibly being true.

Adding to all of that, the term Quantum, makes it specious, and a remote simulation suggests some mysterious simulator (broadcaster…)

Quite a complex retort.

Computers needn't function on a 'broadcaster' and 'receiver' basis, since they often work and are designed to be self-operative.

Yes it seems that virtual reality do offer an opportunity for understanding how a world is fabricated (+ a smaller scale reflection of some of the dilemmas we are faced with in the socalled 'real' world) -  we probably need it for arriving at that understanding?

as RGV says nothing is really  explained by this idea,
it just shifts cause to some new imagined entity or entities.

When we confront infinity or the notion of infinity,
there is immediately difficulty.

there are those who recognize this is the case,
and those whom this makes uncomfortable,
and so try and gloss it over.

Saying God created the world
is an attempt to gloss over the difficulty.

Saying the Tao cannot actually be named,
and is mysterious is an attempt to
allow wonder and not knowing.

Saying: 'God created the world'
leads to the question
which children who are not yet indoctrinated always ask
"who created God"
and so on forever

Semantically 'infinite' is related to 'define' & 'definite', which are opposite to it.
So by definition the infinite is undefined !!!!!!!

In the same way one cannot imagine a beginning to time.
or
the edge of space.

If one can enjoy wonder, openness, mystery and so on,
one need not attempt to define it, bottle it, turn it into a theory, sell it, explain it
or even call it an it, but if we must use "it" perhaps
like they say:
'let it be'
will do

This isn't evil, but we should be aware of the system to have something solid to focus on to discover our true nature. This system shows us what we are not which is a gift to explore what we are and are not.

There's a strong pull away from our feelings of anxiety. Yeah.

A quantum computer is an object or noun, ie. the hardware is static.

The brain is not static, nerve cells live and die and are replaced and connections are constantly being rewired, and it is also linked to the body, not just thru nerve impulses, but through hormones, blood sugar levels, other mineral levels and as we have recently learned by the microbiome in the gut.

When it come to "the mind" again language has turned a verb into a noun, as 'mind' is almost or all, pure process, or processes, or processes processing.

So it seems to me the current popular metaphor of mind / brain as computer or 'quantum computer', may generate more confusion than clarification. But regardless of my view many seem to enjoy the rough metaphor.

Well, a quantum computer is not exactly static. Its wavefunction is evolving continuously over time, and indeed, the trick behind quantum computation is actually not to create a discrete measurement but to allow the qubits to remain continuously entangled. The mind works on this principle. Many mind states (thoughts, opinions, feelings, decisions) are constantly evolving in superposition, and the brain's pathways function according to a distribution of these entangled states. When a neuron fires, this is a "collapse" of the superposition, but we have to look at that, because immediately after collapse the brain states are fully entangled again. Some have suggested that collapse is not even actually taking place.

So in sum, the brain is indeed a quantum computer, which is itself a dynamic process, quite unlike classical computers, which are basically sophisticated hammers.

If a quantum computer is a computer that uses QM to process computations, I'm not sure it's known that the brain is one. I wouldn't rule it out but it's a stretch to state it as fact. I think it's fair to say the brain is a computer, but does it do quantum computations? Does it do more than compute? Is consciousness simply the result of computations? Can consciousness be digital? These are things we can only conjecture at this point in time.

The idea that this is or is not base reality has no objectivity to it. To say there would be thousands of realities and the chance of ours being the base is slim is some loose logic. I would also point out that the purpose of simulations is to simulate reality, so the idea that reality is like a simulation isn't exactly surprising. I'm skeptical that simulations can create, rather than simulate reality. To a large degree it comes down to the question of consciousness.

If we can eventually understand and then create consciousness in an artificial environment, then we would be in a position to take the question of base reality seriously.

why there is reality and patterned, law-like consistency at all, rather than noise or non-reality is not a question physics answers. It's a question physics presupposes an answer to in order to provide other answers.

brain does not compute - this is a basic fact: brain associates sensory input with memory expanding the memory - some association includes mental activity and behavior such as recollection, ideation, communication and action.

even when we review computations and equations, we do it by experiencing associations of examples, and making syntheses that are consistent with existing related associations.

there is no math processor as such, however, we do have a sense of timing (cerebellum), and musical skills (temporal lobe) which can occasionally do numerical math instantly as in the case of savants.  Needless to say it is rare that brain biology lines up that way.

Compute - to determine, especially by mathematics.

Your reply seems almost as stunningly presumptuous as your ideas on the subconscious.

overly deconstructing a simple metaphor for the sake of missing the point. great.

"could we be in a quantum computer right now?"

we are. the brain is in a quantum universe. the brain is like a biomechanical "computer", in the sense that it works like a machine, in that it's complexity is like that of the functions of a "computer", "programming", et al. it's bios is intrinsically "hard-wired" -- even if the "biological" (bio-chemical) component[s] is not actually "mechanical", literally, or even figuratively, because they are causally oriented within a physical shell which is organic -- that is to say, the brain is a "hard-wired" bio-chemical storage and decision controller with nervous input operative on many level of cognition and even automatic function- even the requisite designs of computers, whether by inference, or by our reflecting an apropos "quality" of
'likeness in measurement/form/proportionality' to ourselves in how we understand ourselves best, scientifically; and this seems almost like we have a brain (again) "hard-wired" for this sort of inflection of 'design-by-design', in humans perception and denotation of certain 'qualia' of distinction in our environment and our creations- whether technological or otherwise (but especially so, technological, as per my main point...).

and of course, this all revolves around some notion that the bodily functions are separate from the brain-- which is isn't true-- and that somehow the 'mind' plays a role in this separation, by way of language....i don't see how. it's seems you've mistaken the functions of mind over the body. mind is intrinsic to the brain. you might not realize it's function, but it (your brain) is liminally aware, nevertheless, thus the mind is aware- and it'd be a simple observation, by any outward inference upon examination. in fact, one might find themselves doing things to combat unconscious 'forces' in their brain that they cannot understand the purpose of (especially in disease), but the mind is aware that there is a problem- sort of like when in a dream, one can become aware they are dreaming.

what network is the universe quantum computer running on?

each human being is a quantum algorithm,

how are our brains entangled?

telepathy is just the entanglement of the ionic micro-tubule brain structures

Quote:
Orch OR was harshly criticized from its inception, as the brain was considered too "warm, wet, and noisy" for seemingly delicate quantum processes.. However, evidence has now shown warm quantum coherence in plant photosynthesis, bird brain navigation, our sense of smell, and brain microtubules. The recent discovery of warm temperature quantum vibrations in microtubules inside brain neurons by the research group led by Anirban Bandyopadhyay, PhD, at the National Institute of Material Sciences in Tsukuba, Japan (and now at MIT), corroborates the pair's theory and suggests that EEG rhythms also derive from deeper level microtubule vibrations. In addition, work from the laboratory of Roderick G. Eckenhoff, MD, at the University of Pennsylvania, suggests that anesthesia, which selectively erases consciousness while sparing non-conscious brain activities, acts via microtubules in brain neurons.

"The origin of consciousness reflects our place in the universe, the nature of our existence. Did consciousness evolve from complex computations among brain neurons, as most scientists assert? Or has consciousness, in some sense, been here all along, as spiritual approaches maintain?" ask Hameroff and Penrose in the current review. "This opens a potential Pandora's Box, but our theory accommodates both these views, suggesting consciousness derives from quantum vibrations in microtubules, protein polymers inside brain neurons, which both govern neuronal and synaptic function, and connect brain processes to self-organizing processes in the fine scale, 'proto-conscious' quantum structure of reality."

If our brains computed (determining issues by mathematics) naturally i.e. without training (associative learning of computation methods/tables/relationships) and application orientation (such as what is a suitable method to apply in perceived cases - also associative), then everything would be much more measured in every way in society and in non-human forms as well.

this computation idea derives from false interpretations of what a computer is starting more than 50 years ago.

but thanks for taking note that I strongly oppose the idea of subconscious which was proposed to explain why we do things we wish we had not done (i.e. because of sub-conscious motivations).

Rather than producing theory that accepts what can be observed, both suggestions are based upon ignorance and wish fulfillment: 1 - brain is a computer, and 2 - mind has subconscious and conscious activity and maybe more levels of spiritual life all the way to god.

the body of psychiatry based upon belief in subconscious and encumbered with layered errors has produced the remarkably faulty but authoritative DSM-5 which is useful for overmedicating people whose behavior strays too far from acceptable and enables "temporarily insane" criminals to skip jail.

What is funny about this thread is the dogmatism, and certainty displayed by a great number of posts here.

One way of evaluating a theory is testing predictions it makes.
This is a complaint about string theory which might, eventually supersede quantum theory.

General Relativity has made & passed many predictions, but quantum theory doesn't reconcile with it perfectly.

Dark matter & dark energy & exactly what goes on in black holes are all open questions.
As is whether "the standard model" of elementary particles will hold up.

So the science side of the argument is much more shaky when it comes to statements about quantum computers, of which by the way none exist except for a few feeble experimental units.

Leaving aside that there are no experts here, at the level of the guy's who developed these theories and are still trying to refine them.

On the philosophical side 4 initial questions arise:

1) who programs this hypothetical master computer in which we are supposed to be a simulation

2) why do they bother?

3) Are they also a simulation in a still more meta or larger computer?

4) Who built it and why?

Then there is the issue of causation, which it seems this theory hopes to answer, and as previously stated, because one can not imagine a beginning to time, there can be no satisfactory first cause, that an open and intelligent mind can accept.

On this forum we had a thread called "the mind is a muscle", if we put the 2 together we get muscles are quantum computers, or even more amusingly quantum computers are muscles.

But of course a sense of humor, is the last thing, those trying to prove a point, want to deal with.
Of course if the theory were "true" their points would all be, just more simulations, from the Q. computer's output. Wonder what all the simulations will be programed to do next? Wonder if they are capable of enjoyable humor or if the only output allowed is deadly seriousness?
