Psilocybe Subaeruginosa is a species which likes cold conditions. The season could begin in March or as late as May. I think the el nino southern oscillation index affects the timing of its appearance and its abundance but I havn't tested this hypothesis yet.

Generally only fruit during the colder winter months. Sub season is still a few months away.

Good question Bob, that's one we don't hear about much.

As someone who has been contemplating picking again this year, Papuana looks interesting! Some mountainous areas may get early fruiting this year with the cold weather we've been having in the snowies lately...

I think P.papuana needs a couple of good rainfalls to start fruiting. Then they fruit from Dec-July here at 30 degrees S. Season doesnt seem as important as rainfall.

However they fruit under cover of trees and logs until April. From then on with the cooler conditions and less sun intensity they'll fruit out in the open.

Check clay soil where water can sit in puddles for a while after rain.

Hello all!
New face to these boards and hopefully I will have some great pics to share with you this season. I've recently migrated from the ACT to NSW South Coast and this will be my first year picking this region
The next 7 days look like low 20's and a nice drop of rain for my area - any advice on what types of areas I should start my hunting??

G'Day everyone.
Another new face here, this will be my first year properly picking, a few years back I came across a field full of little blueys. Didn't consume any because I was aware of the risks and had little knowledge but it peaked my interest and I've been researching ever since.
Finally some rain in the forecast this week in the Newy area and I'm keen to see what the season brings us all!
Happy hunting! :mushroom2:

Should be plenty of meanies - Panaeolus cyanescens around in cow paddocks up and down the coast if we get a good rainfall event. Then in the weeks to come goldtops - Psilocybe cubensis should also start fruiting as well. Just need that rain.

Welcome to shroomery guys. Hope you have a great season.

Welcome to the shroomery, you can create your own thread and we will be happy to help you identify your observations.

All you have to do is post clear up close pictures of the cap, gills/pores and stipe (stem), an in situ photo is also helpful.

There seems to be scarce information on P. Papuana. The only observations I could find were for Coffs Harbour area.

Can anybody comment on the distribution? Can it be widely found in NSW or is it limited to a few particular areas?

EDIT: Ok, so there is this thread.

Still happy to hear any extra info.

Finds for Coffs Harbour, Sydney and Wollongong. I've heard of a possible find in Victoria. They may also occur in the Grampians there. Perhaps they're widespread through the dividing range. If you go back a few years P.alutacea were unknown to most mushroom hunters yet they're common through the Adelaide hills and Victoria with more confirmed finds as interest builds.

Here P.papuana has an affinity for log dumps, bulldozed mounds, bandicoot digs and areas where sawdust has been lying around. Runoffs and ditches in these areas are the places to look.
Same goes for the undescribed species I wrongly called light coloured P.papuana.

Best of luck this year searching for those two species. P.papuana has a very intense effect. The other species is more relaxed and cruisey. Pronounced body effect as well. Unlike papuana which is all in the head.

For bobwastaken and any other aficionados. New species as DNA sequenced by Alan Rockefeller.
Mushroom observer 268682, 271407 & 271568.
This species prefers a more open habitat to P.papuana in Summer.

In autumn and winter both species can be found side by side.

Here is a list of distinct species I have found in NSW. Date when first found and where.

P.subaeruginosa -1981 Beecroft
P.cyanescens - 1981-1988 Beecroft. Highway built destroying habitat.
Pan.cyanescens - 1981 near Gloucester
Pan.cinctulus - 1981 near Gloucester.
P.cubensis - 1982 near Gloucester.
P.pelliculosa - 1998 - 2003 Hampton. Pine forest clear felled.
P.tasmaniana - 2009 Dalmorton.
P.semilanceata - 2009 Dalmorton.
P.alutacea - 2016 W of Coffs Harbour.
P.papuana - 2016 W of Coffs Harbour.
P.undescribed 2016 W of Coffs Harbour.

Perhaps widespread for what little I know.

Good point. Better edit it. Dates are on mushroom observer if you care to know when.

Thank you very much. My eyesight is really bad. Trying to do it on this mobile phone. Blah. Think I'll sign off for a while. I'm a bit too serious about a hobby that's meant to be fun.
Hope everyone finds a new species to add to their list this year.
