Was out on a little walk with Psilygirl today, not looking for anything, but stumbled on these little guys. They were growing in freshly shredded woodchips mostly of alder. Never found morels before so just wondering if they may be or if they are Verpa bohemica. I cut them open and they were hollow on the inside.

Peace - @cro

those aren't verpas, I'd say they're closest to morchella elata, definitely true morels though. look kinda dried :\, no fresh ones around the area?

Yeah, I think they're morels also the cap was united with the stem. Nothing else around, the whole area looked kinda dry. It was surprising to us because we were on our way to an apple orchard to take a quick look, and found these 100 yards before the orchard on woodchips on the side of the road... none in the apple orchard, however.

Peace

As the others already noted, those are definitely true morels.

There are 2 features that make it easy to tell. First, the cap is clearly made of ridges and pits, not just wrinkles. Second, the mushroom is completely hollow.

Nice find, and excellent photo.

Happy mushrooming!

Those are very close to Morchella elata, or the black morel. They are common in the Spring in the PNW. I find them commonly in red bark chips. I'm cautious of the specimens I chose to take home as many of these areas may be sprayed with various chemicals.

Nice find!

Joshua
