Doh, Martha Mist-akes
    #25750662 - 01/18/19 04:10 AM (6 years, 15 hours ago)

Okay, so I decided to build a Martha.

I have as much 2x4 as I need and 'found' some sticky stretchy plastic (600mm wide) and am going to frame up a room, cover each frame in sticky plastic, then assemble. I found some wire shelves cheap locally, too easy . . .

Room is easy, then comes the issues.

I bought an evaporative cooler, which seems way to big (12L capacity) and the low setting seems kinda high.

I also bought an ultrasonic humidifier (5L capacity)

My problem is controlling these devices. Both of them have no timers on them. When they are turned off and back on, they reset to the off position, so I can't control them by a plug timer.

If I leave the humidifier on all the time, too much wet.
If I leave the fan on all the time too much dry.

What if I leave a decent exit vent and have both running all the time?
This is intended to be outside . . .

Any thoughts to help out a noob...

Sounds like you need a cheaper humidifier that doesn't have the digital crap so you can use it with a timer then

Get a digital timer for your fan that you can set to whatever you want...  and get a humidistat for your humidifier.  And put the humidifier outside of the tent and pump over humidity through 1/2” PVC.  Highly recommend making the hold in the tent in the top, and towards the back as far as it will go.  Reason for this is it will drip a bit of water....  and having it I. The center ( like me, makes the center part of the tent not usable as I don’t want drips of water upping my co tam chances.

I also put a Harvey duty plastic bag on the bottom, elevated the tent with bricks about 6 inches and put a hole through the trash bag so that water does not pool.

Dial it in, it will work better...  but so far, my Martha is not nearly as good as a tub.  But it does ok with cakes.  My journal has my setup I think if you want to look at that.

Ultrasonic cool mist humidifier.  It’s not digital.  Has a knob so will work with a timer or humidistat.

He said it resets to off position when it is given power for the first time. That means its has some sort of digital control. Hence the timer not working for him. Even a digital one wouldn't solve his problem

Thanks for your reading skills

Will have to rethink the humidifier. Fun justifying to the wif.
Seems like 15mins every 1-2 hours is where peeps end up.

Is there a problem with a constant breeze inside the tent?

Sorry!  I obviously mis-read that.  Try returning it for a refund.  That should appease wifey.

I like the idea of a constant breeze and may turn mine on for a few days to see how it goes.  I have my cakes in a tub with 3 inches of soaked verm...  they are “floating” on foil boats.  And that tub is in my Martha...  I had cakes just in the tent, and they would not fruit...  and surprisingly enough, even with 95% RH, still were dried out..  they would pin, but were very pale, and the cake was just dry.  Even with misting etc..  I’m gonna try the fan on all the time and see what happens.  FAE is the biggest issue in a Martha, in my opinion.  The fan may help that.

NP!
Will try with what I have.
Will use perlite/pumice in trays also. Had the idea of having larger pieces on the bottom in 1/2 inch of water also.
I could control times initially with the amount of water in the unit.

What about this as a contender.

Suggest can control ANY humidifier, though not the one I have . . .

If you want your controller to be very accurate you should look up hm1500 sensor. The sensor that comes with the inkbirds and whatnot is ok for a bit but its not accurate for long. Just cut the sensor it comes with off, connect the correct wires and your good to go.

Just picked up an inkbird before my first gourmet fruit in a greenhouse set up.
Can say that I am completely satisfied knowing its going to be monitored and not just timed.

Now the problem seems to be to find a humidifier that can be 'controlled'.

All of the commercial units I can find here are too 'clever' to be controlled by turning the power on and off.

I see foggers and floats on amazon, though I'd have to find a local power supply, which shouldn't be too hard.

Does the inkbird allow logging over time?

Ultrasonic humidifiers should work.
I'm unsure if it allows logging of information anywhere but if it did it would say in the amazon detail of the product.
It's pretty informative.

So where in the martha does one place their humidity sensor?

Top, middle, bottom, intake, outlet?

Any recommendations?

Mine is on the middle rack towards the back of the tent hanging over the shelf.

Where do you have your fan inlet/outlets and humidifier?

I was thinking inlet to the top with humidifier, and outlet at the bottom. It seems spores and moisture are gravity driven.

Twonky's favorite setup is the "donut" humidifier!

These "donut ultrasonic humidifiers" are available for very cheap, and can be run on very little power.  They use USB chargers as a power supply, and if you find a decent USB charger with multiple outputs, can be adjusted in number and amperage/voltage to control maximum output. They have no switching internally, so if they're getting power, they're on.  Unless the vessel they are in runs out of water, they won't have water level issues, since they float.  Brilliantly simple, cheap and effective!

Found a humidifier locally that will fit the bill. I have a humidity controller coming too ;-)
Will control with timer until controller arrives.

Will be running the evaporative cooler 24/7 and measuring humidity.

Nearly finished Martha structure. 1300mm wide x 650mm deep x 2100mm high with 4 shelves 500mm apart. Double skinned for temperature dampening.

Just need to finish the doors, and duct the air and mist. . .
