Yes, but not horrible... when it starts moving up the stipe, you'll want to increase FAE

Even more than a lid flip? I'm not running a fan either, so it's pretty much still air in a walk in closet. I can turn the ceiling fan on in the room and leave the closet door open if it needs more than that.

I woke up to this little Smurf village with my first broken veil

I'm going to try and spore print that one. I am guessing these will need to be harvested as they open since there is a variation on sizes in this box. The density is light enough that I can reach them with an exacto.
I've got 2 quarts of B+ and PE to spawn today as well, so I'm glad it's the weekend. Thanks again Caps - now comes all the 2nd flush questions

You can harvest as they're ready... let any you intend to print open nearly flat... this will help ensure maturity, and allow you to get 3 dark prints in 24 hours (8 hours a piece)... I like to do an initial 1 hour print, and either keep for personal use or toss it, many contaminants will fall with the first spores

I finished harvest of the 1st box this morning for a wet weight of 324g.

Unfortunately I overshot the timing and the spore drop is pretty bad. Is this going to create issues for the subsequent flushes, and can anything be done to mitigate that?

The other 2 boxes are coming along with a light pinset, but that's ok.

There is a spot that concerns me - does this look like anything I need to worry about? I can't smell anythgin off, but i don't like the color.

As always, thank you to everyone for getting me this far!

I would be more concerned about this spot -

You can always scoop the unsettling spot with a spoon and the casing would recover just fine...

I felt the same way about that one when I first saw it but seems to have been just a water dropplet that was yellow, if there is such a thing. It hasn’t ready done much and has been there for a while. Thank you for putting eyes on it!

Yeah probably just a myc piss or water droplet...it's hard to tell from that pic. Also you may want to mask the sides of the container from light to avoid side and bottom pinning like the two pins on the right pushing between the substrate and the container side...

Light is not a pinning trigger... full colonization and FAE are... 12/12 lighting has been shown beneficial to mycelium through all stages of growth from spore to spent... maintain proper surface conditions to avoid side pins... tamping the edges a bit helps as well... update your sources as practices evolve rather quickly and errors are often repeated from habit

Nobody is claiming that light is in any way triggering pinning conditions, it is just a means to get a uniform flush by pointing them which way to grow. More like a lighthouse. Patching the sides and bottom of the container always stops side and bottom pinning and this is not something out of a fairy tale. You can always try both ways and see for yourself

I get no side pins... no liner, no light blocking... just proper surface conditions and tamping the edges a bit... Seems a bit of a crutch for less than ideal conditions

I don't cover either, but with covering you don't ever get a chance for side and bottom pinning.

Not true... I've seen tubs with black trashbag liners given shitty conditions sidepin like a motherfucker!

And not the worst I've seen

Ive got a buddy who's been growing for years, uses liners, and always gets tons of side pins anyways. He thinks he's the shit and knows everything, so his ego prevents him from learning anything new or moving forward in any significant way.

Well, one thing I know for sure is it looks like I have got some learning to do regarding proper surface conditions. I stayed away from misting but now I see the need for it, and also see how quickly the surface sucks the mist in - I have started misting these 2x daily at least with 2 trigger sprays per box. I think that if light were an issue I would have gotten pins all the way around - some of these developed in locations that were out if the greatest light exposure.
Boxes #2 and #3 have both got side pinning, with my largest mushroom yet growing sideways. These are still snapped closed, holing off the flip as long as possible since they seem to look good to me(?)

I think this one is coming out shortly - the veil is breaking.

The box I harvested is looking like it took a beating, so I'm just leaving it rest and regroup after a nice long bottom soak and drain.

I wanted to post a quick update to wrap up the first flush. Boxes #1 & #2 were finished up yesterday, floated, drained, and lids back on for the 2nd flush. In summary it was 18 days from spawn to harvest with a yield of 67.5g cracker dry. That leaves me 8 days under my deadline, with any additional flushes as a bonus. While these aren't that big for most, they were the largest of my haul - can't wait to chomp 'em

Huge thanks to Caps and the other that freely offered their advice and guidance! You guys are awesome.
