First bulk grain grow. So excited!
    #25755135 - 01/20/19 02:20 AM (5 years, 2 months ago)

First grain grow.  Started with colonized brf half pint jars. Used them for slurry to knock up quart jars of boiled whole oats from my local feed store. Once they were 100% colonized I broke them up into small shoeboxes with a 1:1 ratio of oats to coco cor with perlite and gypsum. Think I did 1:2 on few to see the difference. It's been about 10 days since I rubbed them. I left the lids snapped on so far when should I flip the lids ?

You’re suppose to use vermiculite, not perlite.

Not sure what Tek you were following, but

And rubbed them? Why are you rubbing your boxes or surface?

If you used vermiculite and spawned 10 days ago I’d say flip the lids once you start seeing pins. You’ll lessen the risk of your surface drying out and it will create natural beads of moisture once the mycelium really starts taking hold.

Just be patient and you should start seeing knots which are little white spots. Evaporation of those beads of moisture should happen naturally. Evaporation is one of the main pinning triggers.

Your sub looks on the wetter side. Field capacity of your sub is also important. Should be fine though. Some people flip before full colonization and have decent results. I’ve been waiting for pins lately and get some nice first flushes.

Welcome to the world of bulk. You'll never look back.:mushroom2:

I was gonna ask if you meant to say verm? But it looks like there is perlite in there. Like Madhatter said, it's meant to be vermiculite not perlite. If so, you're far from the first person to do that, but it can still work. Perlite is generally just for the bottom of non-tub fruiting chambers, although the occasional person uses it for other stuff.

I've used Frank's Tek for years now. It works, it's easy. Try this one next time, be sure to use verm instead of perlite next time, you will have better results.

Yeah guess I messed up and read perlite somewhere. Well I have a few tubs and if it goes well I'll stop doing brf cakes.

I think you would fare better with more FAE to compensate for the higher water content of the substrate.
Also aiming for more flat and uniform surface will get you more consistent and identical looking fruits.

Here’s a Tek I use for my sub

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24077162

I use a brick of coir, two quarts of vermiculite, a cup of gypsum after a couple hours since adding boiling water. For that mix I use 4 1/4 quarts of boiling water for my sub. If your sub is to wet still after it cools you can always add more verm to soak up extra water. Sometimes I’ll squeeze water out first if I overdid the water content.

Field capacity is where you squeeze your sub and only a small trickle comes out, or a few drops. You don’t want it to dry or to wet. Just like goldy locks, you want it “just right”.

You’ll get it down eventually. Set backs happen. Keep at it

Your sub was over field capacity, try making it less wet next time. Chalk it up to a learning experience and keep on trucking. You’ll get it down!

Oooh... and use vermiculite next time
