Thinking about getting into agar? Let me tell you a story. * 2
    #25750900 -

I came back to the game months ago from a seven year hiatus and nocced a few jars with some ms syringe—it’s just how we used to do things.  Some pe and some cr.  Well, they finally colonized after losing a jar of each to contams so I spawned it all to tubs.  The whole process took more like 2 months.  The pe worked out and I got a decent flush.  The cr got cobweb and I tossed it.

About the time I spawned the tubs like a month ago, I decided I wanted to get into agar.  I had a bunch of b+ syringes, so I nocced four more jars with it.  That was December 13th.  I figured I’d have something to spawn by the time I had plates ready.

I started ordering all the materials I needed.  As they came, I started with some germ plates, made two different transfers, and nocced four jars with agar on January  3rd.  That’s 20 days later than I nocced the jars with ms from the same syringe set.

So here we are, January 18th.  This jar is exactly 15 days old and it’s gorgeous.  The ms jars, now 32 days old, and aren’t even close, in fact, they don’t seem to be recovering from the shake I gave them three days ago, and I suspect contams. I already threw out one jar that definitely had a contam

So In the time it took a ms jar to NOT colonize and probably contam,  I was able to learn agar teks, amass my materials,  make a hundred plates, germ, transfer, transfer again, and nocc the jars which are now 100%.

Moral of the story is that syringe to grain is a piss poor way of growing, and I am astonished at how quickly and safely I was able to colonize using agar.  I’ll never look back.

So if you’re thinking of maybe looking into agar, quit thinking and do it.  It’s easy, fun, and you’ll be very glad you did it. It’s literally at minimum 2 or 3 times faster than my old ways, and with zero contams.

It’s astonishing what selection can do for your output.  I cloned a few plates of the pe and they’re looking great today.  Can’t wait to start making transfers on it.

There’s something about smoking weed and working on transfers with some good tunes that just makes me feel like a million bucks. Edit: and the feels I get when wrap the plates in cling wrap. Don’t even get me started.  I was once a plumber and I’m wicked fast at wrapping pipe threads in Teflon so I’m also wicked good at wrapping plates.

Hey, what would happen if you wrapped a plate with Teflon? They sell the double wide roll..

I'm in the same situation as you.  Back into it after a 6+ year break.  Been a lurker here for years, was active on shroomotopia when it was around.

Anyways I started back into it going m/s to agar.  I had some old syringes I was unsure of quality.  Pakalensis and Brazil.  The pakalensis took off and germinated in 24 hours.  I've already done multiple transfers from the initial m/s plate, and am comfident I was able to make a clean LC  from one of original transfers from the m/s plate.  I used the LC to noc 5 PF style cakes, amaranth flour substituted in place of BRF, last Sunday.  Day 5 and they are taking off.

I did my first transfers of Brazil last Sunday as well.  Very slow growing.  But so far contam free in appearance on the transfers.

I used to be intimidated by Agar work and even G2G transfers.  After seeing the agar dishes after being open in a SAB my confidence in that type of set up is 100%.

I plan on getting some grain this weekend to get ready and noc with my Pakalensis LC as well.  Just going to give my test agar plate of the LC a few more days to prove itself.  So far the cakes look fantastic and are probably already 25% colonized.

Agar has made life so much easier, already.  I don't feel I'll lose much if anything to contam vs just going m/s to grain or m/s to LC to grain.
