I use just vermiculite right now, it’s a 1: 1 I know it’s not optimal but it’s what I have on hand
What’s your mix?

How many of the 1/2 pint jars per shoebox? First time tryer here and I want to get an idea of how many shoeboxes for 12 jars.

This is just about the coir hot water prep thing. It seems to work for a good amount of time. But like i said before, i always see mold in my coir after its like a month old. I guess this is why the last grow, it worked real good and after 3rd flush or so of healthy cubes (and they even ate up the coir much quicker, had more rhizomorphic growth than pasteurization) heres an actual pic (altho with no real lighting, just taken with an older phone) of what happens to my heat treated coir after a month in just normal conditions. For the record it was right at field capacity. Youd squeeze and maybe 2-3 drops fall out.
So before tossing this batch of coir, i took a pic. Its not a good pic, but the mycologists here can tell anyway. And i do love the ease of heat treating.
Also for the record, i like the bag method also just as long as its inspected every 1-2 days, this is not about the bag.
About 1 month after heat treating, coir is starting to grow white mold. It is not the brand or my watering technique, this happens everytime. Pasteurization is so annoying (i prefer PCing Lol, seriously) but it seems like even after like 5+ flushes, it still wont grow mold. Again i wish the pic was better, i was trying to just quickly take a snap of the mold. No thats not gypsum or verm. just mold. I'll leave the remainder of my next heat treated coir batch out the same way and snap a pic in a month
Still i guess a month or so is enough to get your main flushes in. Both teks seem to have their ups and downs. This being easier but a shorter window

As far as i know there are no "beneficial" thermophilic microbes in coir so pasteurization is moot as there's none to shift the balance of

It could be environmental factors. I had a shoe box with coir go 4 months without mold. Occasionally it would sprout a shroom here or there and I enjoyed the experiment. I tossed it when I wanted to reuse the shoe box. I'm not sure how long it could have gone? I bottom watered it a few times and it was definitely oversaturated once or twice.

I wouldn't let brf jars sit longer than a week before knocking up

Great, so a day or two would be fine? Do I leave it at room temp?

Well to be clear, coir only develops mold for me when its been heat treated with water, so its wet. For a month. But not past field capacity. Its good for 3 flushes or so. I just dont see ANY contams after pasteurization
Havent been able to really figure out why

I had a g2g candidate jar which was suspected to have wet spot, decided to do shoebox. Spawned 2 weeks ago. Put it in fruiting while it was around 40%, then I just waited. It's little bit too wet I guess.

How many BRF cakes per shoebox would anyone suggest for a great yield? I know it’s a matter of opinion. I’m just trying different things in hopes getting an awesome harvest.
And, what’s the popular opinion between grating cakes or just crumbling them? Do find any difference in outcome?

I would say at least 4 cakes are already 50% substrate too.

Cool - so I’ve been measuring 1:1. Since it is 50% substrate, could I add less coir to the mix (cause it’ll be probably half way to the ridge on the box) or stick with the 1:1?

What is the longest folks have seen to develop pins? I have had some in shoeboxes for almost a month now and no pins. Once the myc got so dry that it was turning off colored. So I resealed for 24 hours and have kept it moist. but zilch nada zip. Sometimes I leave the top on for days. ( they are loose so should have plenty of FAE) sometimes I pull them and mist/ fan. The ambient temp is 75. 12/12 light. Getting a little discouraged is all. Thanks fam.
