Exposing jars to light?
    #2574838 - 04/18/04 09:03 PM (13 years, 10 days ago)

ok - I can't help but want to keep checking on my recently innoculated jars for signs of mycellium. Am I doing any damage by opening up the box they're in and exposing the jars to light? I know thyre' nowhere close to pinning, but I'm still concerned - I want to give them the best chance I can.

Yes you are. If you keep checking them once they start the extra light can trigger pinning in the jar before it's done colonizing. Check them every few days.

he he he.......I know it's hard when your new but it will get to a point when just checking them once a week is a pain in the ass.... :wexican:  I've posted before I'm lazy.

They grow tremendously faster if you dont watch them but every 3 - 4 days-thats a fact!
Well maybe not a "fact"but the word fits-just try it,it works.

When you first start out it is just impossible to not look every day isnt it? Dont worry everyone is the same way in the beginning! It is pretty damn fascinating to watch their life cycle, and important that you do so and learn from what you observe so that you can improve your setup and technique.
It is, as Magash mentioned ,counter-productive to let them see the light on daily basis. You don't want to confuse them because it will slow down the colonization process at the very least.
If you must insist on checking them every day just darken the room or wait untill it's dark outside and use a RED light to look at the jars. The mycelium are not sensitive to light in this part of the spectrum and will be uneffected.---You will soon learn that patience is a key virtue in mushroom cultivation that you will learn as you go along!--Think they grew a little while you were reading this post!

I say look all you want. They may start to pin but this is not the end of the world. Cakes rarely pin before complete colonization anyway.... even if they get light 24-7. You can learn a lot by watching 'em grow your first time out.

It's a good practice to leave your jars and grain be, in the dark.

When you're first starting out though, its pretty much irresistible to look at them 3 times a day, so knock yourself out.

You won't stunt growth or start pinning enough for it to be detrimental to your first grow, besides, the peeking fanaticism will wear off faster if you don't hold back on your urges. And another thing, what kind of first grow experience would you have if you didn't spend hours staring at your mycelium?

I agree!

I'm really excited about this whole process, and it's great to be so close to seeing results after so long being in preperation and researching...

But I'll still try to keep the peeking to a minimum :P
