Temp and Humidity Monitoring entire grow space
    #25742047 - 01/13/19 01:32 PM (5 years, 16 days ago)

I realize there's been a few older threads about this, but I'm wondering if anyone knows of some cheap tech that can do what I want..

I want to monitor the temperature in 2 places of my grow space, and have the data collected continually either cloud-based or on a local server so I can compare them daily. Preferably wirelessly.

I have no experience with raspberry pi type stuff, but I guess I could spend the time to learn it if I had to. I'm happy to just "buy these sensors, configure, check website, run reports".

I'm looking at one made by La Crosse that is $46 on their website that transmits temp/humidity from a wireless sensor to a small unit that plugs into a router. Supposedly has a 200 foot range. you can connect additional sensors but they are almost $40 each. So it sends the info to your router which I think you can view it for free that way but if you pay $.99 a month the data goes them and you can check it remotely from a smart phone. And you can set min/max parameters and it will annoyingly wake you up all night letting you know something is 3 degrees off! :laugh2:

I'm looking at buying one myself.

I like the price and features, but I don't like my data being sent to their cloud server.  What if they go under ? Then the devices become useless.

They've been around I doubt that will happen....$50 investment an $12 a year is worth it to me...if you lose product due to temps how much does that cost you ya know?

A Raspberry Pi is probably overkill. I think an Arduino could be less work, but it depends on how well-versed you are in either type of development. Both can be hooked up to a network/wifi and can be used to periodically enter data in a database on a webserver (which can be situated in your home), which you can then access through some fairly simple php scripts. This will be cheaper and more controllable than an off-the-shelf solution, but of course, it will be much more work to set stuff up. Still, as these kinds of projects go, the concept is fairly simple and the execution should not be problematic for anyone with basic electronics and programming skills. If you lack either of these, I'd go with the kind of OTS solution suggested above.
