pinning wont stop
    #2574573 - 04/18/04 06:00 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

a friend of a friends first grow has started to fruit, some of the veils are starting to break but many of the mushrooms are still very small, and new pins seem to form everyday and none are aborting, new mushroooms just keep coming, some will be ready to harvest within the next day and some(most of them) still need many days to mature, and more just keep coming...what should he do? btw its cube (golden teacher) grown on grain and cased with verm/peat moss.

You shouldnt sound so upset about it, first of all. Second, just pick the mature ones. Let the other ones mature, and when they do, pick them. Simple as that.

Did you start this thread to toot you own horn?

Oh, dont get me wrong, my friends friend is not upset at all with his fruits (in fact he was extremely excited about them), he was just a little confused. So he should just piuck the ones that are ready to be picked, patch the spots he picked from, and then mist the casing taking care not to mist the unpicked shrooms? Or should he skip misting altogether until all shrooms are picked?

also- my friend has 2 casings, only one of them has the massive fruiting. A conditions are the same except for one. Which is moisture content of the cake itself, the one with all the pinning is less moist then the one with not-so-many pins. This happened accidentyl as all casing layer was mixed in one bowl and then put into casings, theone he did first came from the top of the bowl so it had less water in it, the bottom must have had more water sitting in it. So this is apparently an important factor. Other then that they are both kept in a 74-78F temp, in a chamber with perlite humidification. Another interesting thing is the caps of the shrooms, especially one, its very big and the cap has a woodgrain almost like appearance with flame-like patterns of dark stripes, very cool, very trippy.

What AFOAF has done sometimes when this happens is to just skip the full harvest & dunk (he dunk's casings). He just sprays more than normal and harvests what's ready every day or two.

One advantage to this is your casing will be used up quicker and can be replaced by a fresh one if you have it ready to go and space is your issue.

If your casings go well for 3-4 flushes, you won't yield as much this way though. AFOAF has had terrible contam problems and hasn't gotten a casing beyond 2 full flushes, so he thinks this partial harvesting is an advantage in that circumstance.

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed... The cost of one modern heavy bomber is this: a modern brick school in more than 30 cities. We pay for a single fighter with a half million bushels of wheat. We pay for a single destroyer with new homes that could have housed more than 8,000 people..."
