FFU - Possible Cheaper Laminar Flow Hood?

I read on another site that this has been used as a laminar flow hood with success. Being I'm not super handy with woodworking skills to make my own, and not super excited about paying fp's high prices. I'm wondering what you all think of this. Apparently it sells for $686 shipped for a 4x2 unit.

"It’s called A FFU, forced fan unit. 99.995% filtration down to 0.3 micron FFU’s are used in mass in t-bar ceilings to construct clean rooms but can be turned on its side and used as a perfect laminar flow hood."

I was under the impression that FFU stands for Fan Filter Unit. Either way, that is in essence what all the laminar flow hood builds here are. If you like the price, then go ahead.

It just seems strange to me that this wouldn't be a more popular option here if its just as effective and a bit cheaper. Does anyone here have any experience with it?

Pre-built flowhoods are expensive, which is why most people build their own. $300 is a typical budget for one. If you look at most flowhood designs, they replicate that FFU, so we should probably be calling our flowhoods FFUs.

Are you starting out or wanting to update/ invest in better gear? Unless you are getting some kind of return on your investment, spending a couple of $$$ is no easy decision.

China's so cheap.

If u decide to build your own buy some junk wood and focus on making boxes.

Mines all off cuz it was the first big wood project I committed to still works. I can do framing ez I build a room in my garage for a steamer.

I would just say fuck it and build your own fps prices r nuts.

The work is definitely worth it.

I think it's inexpensive because it's coming directly from China, so no distributor Mark ups etc.. if you just Google flow hoods, you  won't find direct China purchases like this. Also it doesn't say if it's 220v or 110v, the product description is pretty vague, doesn't even mention the size.

It says its 1220mm x 610 x 69. You must of missed that part

Make your own, hepa and carbon filter from amazon is around 70 euro give or take and now find a high pressure fans I got one for 110 euro. Now just build a box to the size of your hepa filter... iv had great success using agar and creating  grain spawn no contamination with over 40 to 50 agar plates made with it 

U will save hundreds if u can create your own. Keep trying

I used one of these, it works very well, I made some modifications to suit my needs and I'm really happy with it.

I'm rather tempted. Maybe a birthday present for myself later and if I build one before then I will sell it to someone one here for the cheap. If I got one I'd be sure to get more gourmet growin for the farmer's market.

Shaper, that one looks to be only 5 micron filtration. My understanding was that wasn't good enough.

isnki - can you share what modifications you made to yours?

I am just starting out with all this. I've used a SAB for some agar work with great success and I'm starting to do some g2g. I find the SAB cumbersome and its taking some joy out of this hobby for me. I was considering these as they're a bit bigger 4x2 and I imagine still pretty light comparably. I need something i can put up in a guest room and put away when I'm done. I saw some TCs on here prefer 2X1 (for portability) and don't feel limited by their size. I may go with that first and if I truly outgrow it I may sell it and try and find something that is ideal after knowing a bit more about my needs.

UGH! You're right!

So, perhaps you can be helpful on this front. I also found THESE beasts, and it says " Fan filter unit can filter the 99.9% dust particle which diameter is more than 0.3 micron in the air."

It's not very informative about that though. There's about 20 different people selling this model, and none list the specifications of the filter. It seems to be capable of being a laminar flow hood with minor modification (like laying it down) for $235 shipped. If that's the case, I really really want one. But I can not find the information on the specs.

so I also found these and they seem to be good on all fronts.

99.99% down to 3 microns
106 fpm airflow for the low speed
120v corded
53lbs for 2x3
made in southern california
for $775

so a 2x3 or 2x4 is about the same price as the 2x1 from fp. depending on any mods I'd need to make this could be the one to go with.

At that price I'd rather build one :shrug: I'm looking to hit the $400 or less shipped price range to make it worthwhile.

I could give you a link for a site that sells secondhand ones sometimes fresh out of the box for less than $60. They retail for around $1000-2000. I just paid $200 for mine and it's 2x4. Didn't share the link because I didn't want to violate any forum rules. A surplus seller online usually has them for around $60 plus freight and handling and if you wait they get down to like $20 because they can't hold onto them forever. Right now they have one for $28 lol. Do not pay $600

What search criteria are you using to find this? Only one's I've seen close to this prices are pre-freight, which will double the price really quickly, but I've only searched "FFU" and "Laminar" for keywords.
