Reason/excuse for buying rye berries
    #25743391 -

Hello fellow shroomerites. I invested in several things I've always wanted for this hobby, an AA PC, and 12x24 flowhood is on it's way. (Yes, i could have built a better one for cheaper, but I live in a small town, around 6k people. So questions on what project you're working on come up constantly when buying supplies. Half the town knows me, and knows I dabble in a lot of above the board hobbies, but gotta keep some things to myself.

Which leads to my primary question. I'm starting with wbs, first time venturing into agar and monotubs. But I'd like to try rye berries as well. What reason is there to get rye berries other than feeding livestock and stuff? Cause no one would believe I got any animals I need rye berries for. Thank you everyone for ur input!

Just get oats, they're much cheaper than rye Berry's, more available, and used for feed for a few different animals.

Here's a good tek for how to prepare oats.

Thank you puff. I was looking into oats as well. I can definitely use the dearth function to find this out, but I'm halfway through about 4 different projects today and trying to get this figured out also. Days off are too rare lol. If you don't  mind explaining, do u know the general pros/cons with oats vs rye

Yes, that's how it should be. Where I live everyone makes everything their business whether or not it should be. They have nothing better to do really. And that can cause potential problems with snoopy people that I try my best to avoid.

Pros they are cheaper, cons oats may have a little more debris. I use them cuz they work just as good as rye and a 50lb bag is 12$. And tell people you are feeding squirrels, or some other small animal.

I've used both and never really noticed a difference besides the size of the grain. People have used them pretty interchangably but it really just comes down to preference. For me it was price in my area, rye was like 30-40 for 50# and oats were 10-12 per 50#.

Edit-oats do have a bit more debris (straw like peices) but I never pick them out or wash mine and mycellium colonizes them just fine

1. Purchase an edible LC syringe from a vendor;
2. Create a nice bed of oysters/ King Stoph (or something in your yard);
3. Not only is it fun but you will improve your skill set;
4. Nobody will question why you have a ton of mycology equipment when you grow gourmet.

Tell them you're growing mushrooms with them then leave with your rye...

Not only do you get the benefits of no questions, but you also get to talk about the hobby in front of your friends and family without them being any the wiser what type of mushrooms you're talking about. Just leave out the part about the active ones in conversation. I talk about my hobby to everyone now.

Google wholesale grains for your area, I located a wholesale place that's sells to consumers, I get 50lb organic berries for $42, very clean and always in beautiful shape, never see broken berries. They sell to bakers etc.., they have one hell of a list. This is just a small portion of their product list. I'm in heaven.

I always bring the "home brewing excuse" and say that I'm doing experimental stuff.

Buying rye berries? I'm malting my own rye malt for rye beer.

Buying stuff for in-vitro work? I'm trying to cultivate my own yeast varieties.

and so on....

Rye for the win! The oats I used (producers pride from tractor supply) were fucking horrible! I threw half the bag away.

I get rye locally it either comes in bushel bags (56 lbs) or 50 lb bags. The price fluctuates but the most I pay per bag is around $15.

My preferences are...
1. Rye
2. Wheat
3. WBS

Fuck oats. But that's just my opinion from my experience. They could kick ass for you. :shrug:

I'll say this too. I get 20-21 4 qt spawn bags from a bag of rye. Which depends on whether it was a bushel bag or a 50lb bag.

I only get about 16 4 qt spawn bags from a 50 lb bag of wheat.

So for damn near the same price and for the exact same amount of work... rye gets me more spawn bags which equals more yield.

Thanks for all the info guys! I ended up picking up a bag of oats at tractor supply, flowhood showed up and that's made life alot easier lol. Made up a bunch of agar plates and those are going very well. Excited to see how this turns out!

Oats are supercheap and much cleaner to rinse than the expensive rye berries at Whole Foods. But I will say this. The woman I saw shopping at Whole Foods looked like they came from a whole different universe than most of them at Walmart. I do miss that.

I like using red milo. Its commonly used as chicken feed and I can find it cheap 15 bucks for 50 lbs.
Its a proven grain for what we need here too. Plenty of inoc points being a small grain.
Plus I just think it looks nice in a jar :smile:

I wish I could find milo, I had a friend who had sorghum as a rotational crop and that stuff was great. Go get 5gal buckets of the grain whenever I needed it. But I don't think hes going to have it for a couple years, so oats it is.

Fresh organic oats from a local farm in my area 50lbs for $9. I'm probably going to stock up big-time in case it's not forever. Total no brainer.

Are you too far from another town to go buy supplies there? Can you order things online?

I would be concerned about going the edible route as a cover if the town is so close knit. Not that it'd be a waste to keep up the cover, but it might draw extra unwanted attention as well.
