A few questions I had that I couldn't find in the faq's

1. When I was reading about Her. Erinaceus in GGMM, I noticed that he stated the mycelium (as opposed to spores) does well mixed will sterile water and inserted into grain. Any idea how long this particular mycelium can survive in water? Any clue if it would live or die if mixed with normal saline (0.09% NaCl in water)?
2. Does mcyelium produce CO2 as a waste product? If I was using unfiltered bags, say roughly 5 lbs apiece filled with a wood chip mixture, how much pure oxygen would I have to insert after innoculation to keep things growing?
3. In relation to the above species, H. erinaceus, do you think one could profit from more or higher yeilds by adding (and sterilizing in the bag, etc) a couple of pounds of small diameter cut log with the sawdust/wood chip mixture? Or would that just slow things down?
Thanks in advance for any answers.

Hey, does GG&MM say anything about growing Hericium on straw?

It just mentions hardwood and hardwood sawdust supplemented with rice bran for substrates.

Mushroom mycelium can survive for a long time in water. Here is something about it: http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/25091 But I think it would die in saline water.
Mycellium produces CO2 as a waste product. It would be better to put peroxide in substrate then pure oxygen. Mycellium breaks peroxide in water and oxygen. This way it might be possible to cultivate mycellium in non filtered bags.
You get better yields from a supplemented sawdust substrate then from logs, because it contains more nutrients and colonizes much faster.
I hope this helped a bit...
