Help me dial in my cubes/rye/coir MonoTub - Realtime GrowLog
    #25727139 - 01/06/19 12:25 PM (5 years, 2 months ago)

I'd like to post my procedure and get critique. In particular, I'm struggling with surface humidity as the fruiting progresses.

Details if interested:

Golden Teacher, 4 actual quarts of rye, boiled for 10 minutes, dried down to 46% water content
noc'd with an LI syringe, 650 coir, spoonful of powdered gypsum. no verm. no casing.

Pasty did a tek on micropore and posted this photo of such even humidity, I'm dreaming of having a substrate look this good someday. Mine usually dries out on the sides, and gets way too wet in the center.

This is the best Bag I've ever grown. Yet it still has some dry rye on the surface. I scrape them off, then break up the bag.

I do an improved bucket tek. 3.5 quarts of water to 650g of coir. Second bucket as water jacket. I can barely squeeze some drips out. Can't make a stream. Toss the rye into the bucket and roll it and shake it as little as possible, just enough to mix it. Then into a thick plastic bag.

I then level and cut the plastic without touching anything other than the waste plastic. (the rope you see is my idea to keep the plastic liner off the sweaty wall. I fear the condensation wetting my substrate begins my mold problems, who knows... but its harmless anyway. I remove it soon as the substrate is firm.

I put two layers of 2" micropore tape on the bottom holes and one layer on the top holes. On day one. Set to fruiting conditions immediately

Day 2:

Day 3:

Day 4: I added a third layer of micropore to the bottom holes.

Day 6: Three inches of the outer edge of the substrate is drying faster than the center of the substrate I added a fourth layer of micropore tape on the bottom holes yesterday. I mist just the edges to attempt to even it out.

Day 10: Knots forming

Day 15: Some pinning. Heavily misting the outer edge once or twice a day, leaving the lid entirely off every other day to dry out the center, which gets too wet and almost starts pooling.

Day 19: the lower tub is the grow log, the upper tub is identical, other than being stacked on top, and getting warmer, and sweatier than the growlog tub. I think that I've learned that I'm too scared of it getting too wet, so I prematurely open up the holes to breath it out, but in doing so, I damage the substrate and cause it to be unhappy. I'll keep posting this tub, which will eventually mature, but man its taking its own sweet time.

My other new tubs with 5 layers of tape on the bottom and 2 layers on the top holes are doing great!!! Mostly even moisture across the surface edge to edge.

Day 20: Weird looking fruit, and very sparse. I have 6 layers of tape on the bottom holes and 3 layers on the top holes. Drying out less now.

I'll keep posting every few days. It seems to get problematic a few days before pinning happens, or about 13 days in.

Day 4: Getting dry near the bottom holes on my substrate, as seen in this photo... I need advise...

I read that people not casing might want 3 layers of micropore tape on the bottom holes. So I added a third layer today. I'm hoping the thicker bottom hole tape can allow me to dial in the surface more evenly.

Should have a dry ring around the holes:  let's you know you're getting FAE... if you feel it's drying out add another layer on the bottom holes... don't worry about condensation much, as it only indicated a higher temp inside than outside the tub, monitor surface conditions... you want a glistening dew allowing evaporation to occur between mistings to stimulate pinning and avoid over-saturating the substrate... it's day 4, calm down... there's still plenty of water there

In the recent past the drying I have been experiencing around the edges and near the bottom holes have caused bruising, which lead to mold. On dozens of tubs just like this one.

I don't like the harsh dryness near the hole... I feel like others can run a mono without that.

I put another layer on this morning.

I am willing to try that... but I am in tight quarters and don't really have room for lids set askew. But I probably could make it work. But first, I'd like to learn to dial these tubs in with micropore tape, if possible.

Oh, and Caps, I think we misunderstood one another... the drying around my bottom holes is on my substrate, not a ring of condensation free tub wall....

Gotcha... yeah,  add another layer of tape and give those spots a light misting

day 5: I added a third bottom layer of tape, now a fourth one (I don't think anyone else does 4) the substrate keeps getting crispy right at the bottom holes. I lightly misted last night.

Maybe a second layer of MP tape on the top holes?

I'd think that'll do it... I ran 2 on top 3 on the bottom when I was modifying

and my holes are a little larger... 1.5"  standard 6 hole. No case. My holes are right at the substrate level. I wished they were a little higher.

Best position for them... It will perform best once you have it dialed in

Day 6: There are now 4 layers of tape on the bottom holes, two on the top. I misted the edges after I took these photos, as I've been doing almost everyday because the edges dry out fast, but the center is fine.

I wished I could make it look as good as Pasty's unmisted mono

You'll get it dialed in and next run will be awesome... you mentioned that the holes are larger, might serve to put a piece of duct tape over part of the top of the bottom holes inside and out... nursery to restrict the outflow of air (moisture) a little

3.5 quarts is the bare minimum imo. you might wanna up that to 3.75 quarts of water.

Ahhhh, didn't think of that. Maybe the coir is a tad dry and the organism is pulling the water into its core, drying the edges....

I was trying to keep the whole thing on the dry side to avoid contams, but frankly, I'm not really having any lately....
