I wouldn't. Soak your grain overnight and let that be your prep. If it's not 100% good the next day then simmer for a few minutes.

These are the TEKs I use. They're all as cheap and easy as possible, just like your mom.

I let my rye soak for too long and it smelled like trash juice. Simmered, prepped, and PC'd it. Made my house and clothes smell rank af. inoculated yesterday so we'll see. I suppose thats kinda close to your worst case senario.

Also, i noticed that the soaking grains begin to smell different at around the 20hr mark.

It depends a lot on the quality of the grains.  You soaked then simmered and dried?  I would say 24 hours after simmer is a maximum.
After about 24 hours things tend to get smelly probably acidic, and the mycelium doesn't like it.

So give it a try but anything past 24 hours I would be wary of.

I always prep my grains and jar them a day or two ahead of sterilization, I've never had a problem  even if I get sidetracked and don't get around to PCing them for a week.

Won't trust that
Really don't want to lose a few kilos at once with something as simple as just doing my jars after prep

Flash drying? I set mine out overnight. Makes it a very easy process if you like to do things the next day.

I personally wouldn't prep and leave them in the jar til PC.
I would just let the oats dry overnight or until you are gonna use them.
After they are good and dry,I put them in a big bowl with a paper towel on top until I load and PC them.(sometimes 4-8 hrs til I get to it )

Hydrated and dried overnight.

After sitting in bowl for some hrs.

Stirred and ready for loading into jars for PC.

One more super dumb question
If say a Jar needs 3 hours of PC
Can you split in 2 and say do 2 hour run wait and do 2 hour run

This is not for me, I would not do it.
But I think its because I'm fucked that I'm thinking of it:shrug:
So what you guys think?

If I can't PC jars immediately I stick them in the fridge until I can. Definitely been times that they will sit for a week+ and I haven't noticed any issues. Wouldn't say that's best practice, but if that's what you have to do, it doesn't appear to matter much. Add some extra PC time if it makes you feel better.

As for the split time, I don't think that would work. You are aiming for sterilization and if you don't achieve that in one go, you need to start over. It doesn't compound. Say you PC half the time, once it gets back to room temp, whatever wasn't sterilized will begin growing again requiring a full cycle to kill. Not sure what you'd need to PC for 3+ hours tho, especially jars and if you are strapped for time in the first place.

Again, if you can't get to all the jars in one day, just refrigerate and do the rest as soon as you can. I would advise letting chilled jars come to room temp before PC to avoid any glass shattering.

Time in the PC needs to be continuous/one cycle.  You need the very middle of your jars to reach temp and be at temp for so long for sterilization.

Absolutely. I amended my post to reflect that point.

I do rye binges, I'll do 64 qts of rye in a few days 2-3, back to back PCing. I do staggered batches, soak batches of 8 qts ( what my PC holds) so let's say I start soaking at noon on Sunday, I'll start soaking another batch at 3pm, and another at 6-7pm, then the following day- PC 3 batches, and soak another 3. pull from PC after pressure drops, cool on counter, reload pc, usually I have 3 soaking big pasta pots in roation. Don't like to mega bulk, prefer batches, in case there's an interruption, PC malfunction, etc.. if there's a problem, only need to toss 8 jars worth. Here's part of a 3 day run. Obviously I don't really leave the house during the rye binges. Get'r done, lol

Most a jar sat before pc has been 6 hours. I would try to schedule so they don't have to sit. I

It's ok to let them sit after the PC  for a bit, but anything over a week might start messing with moisture content, especially if your gonna store the jars after they are colonized.
